 Challenging degree results...

OK, this is an odd one.

Briefly, I had a rocky uni career - including getting thrown out of the same uni, twice, getting back into that uni, twice, going through finals etc. but by the end had a DREADFUL relationship with my main tutor who hated me (because I never got any essays in on time and many not at all). Unfortunately, just before finals the prof retired, my tutor was made the prof and in charge of exam results.

The way finals marks worked, there was a proportion of your marks from your 2nd year results, 30% or something. And a proportion from your 3rd year results, and a proportion from your 3rd year essay marks. I got a 3rd in my 2nd year, but worked like stink at the end of my 3rd year, redid all my essays and some extra penal ones, got 2:1 or 1sts for all those essays, and a 2:1 in the final exams. So was expecting to get a 2:1 or maybe a 2:2 if the maths went against me, it's a bit complex.

However, the new prof pulled out a rule where they can vary the % of the 2nd year results they use, if they feel it better reflects performance. It's designed to let them bump up the results of people who panic and blow their final exams. He used it to bump down my results as low as he possibly could, which meant I got a 3rd. I think he was trying to make a point - I had gotten a bit famous, or rather infamous at that point, for being able to do sod all for 3 years and then suddenly pull it out of the bag at the last minute and he wanted to make an example to the rest of the students.

I've been angry about that all my life. And now I'm going through the diagnosis process I'm getting progressively more angry.

Sooo... question is.

IF I get a diagnosis. Is there any chance I could go to the uni and say ... OK, no blame here as you didn't know about my disability. But, it now turns out that was the cause of all the problems. I'm not asking to resit or have anything remarked. I'm happy to stand by the work I did. But in the light of my diagnosis I demand my grade be revalued on the same basis as every other student in that year so I get the 2:1 I was always entitled to.

It was over 20 years ago. With any luck, the prof has retired now which would probably help.

What do you think?

Redhead you sound like you had a Uni life like mine, although somehow you managed to finish it there. I was always among the top students in my whole year. Everyone always looked to me for some help with complicated process, theories, etc. For some reason though I couldnt manage to get my arse into the Uni enough and they kicked me out twice for not attending. Even though when I did attend, they struggled to not give me full marks for my work. And my exams were always top notch as well. Ive gotta laf looking back cos I must have been a proper Enigma. Do F all, walk in and pass the exams, getting the best marks in the whole year in the process. LMAO. Wish I had got a handle on myself back then as I would have walked out with 1st class honours. Swine eh.

The difference was that I never got far enough with the Uni (only managed to get half way through yr 2, and at 3 attempts lol) to get into your situation.

I have actually been thinking of approaching the Uni and asking them to take me on for my Masters now that I know whats going on with me. Im not sure they would take on someone with 3rd class honours normally so it would require some convincing. Im sure if they looked back at the work I actually did they would see the pattern and perhaps bend the rules a little (must be a blue rule that one lol). Maybe if I actually sort out my membership with the institute then it would look better lol. Madscot AMIBiol ;D

Its just a thought right now though so I will see what happens next year.

I do sincerely hope things go well for you in your quest Redhead because it sounds like you were similar to me in the respect that you should have done a whole lot better and deserved better more to the point. Good luck anyway.

Ouch Redhead! They were Mean! I'd be thinking that was a nasty case of discrimination without an extenuating circumstance or condition. I'm guessing the only way you'd find out is to talk to the Uni in question. I'm guessing but I think it would be the academic registrar that you'd need to sound out. But a fair bit of thought might need to go into what you are going to say.

I struggled like hell in uni, not cause of the kids or cause I'm not smart enough - the mere thought sitting still in the lecture theatre used to kill me. Once there my brain would zone out, even in lectures I was really interested in.

I had a tutor try and cap my grades maliciously. In my 2nd year my husband of almost ten years left me unexpectedly for someone else, I had to move house, my youngest was diagnosed ADHD, I suffered a miscarriage and had a nasty cancer scare. I was ill during both sets of examinations that year ended up having to resit the year. Interestingly, the module that my tutor was trying to cap at 40% was coursework only. And though they made me repeat the module when I resat the year I hadn't actually failed it the year before! I was very cross they'd made me resit it only to give me capped 40% when I'd passed it with 60+% previously! So I continued to fight until they changed it - several months after my finals. So they do change things. But I don't know how it works after such a long period of time.

I don't feel like any of my work at uni (Save for my thesis) reflected my ability. And I don't know about you but it really knocks my confidence and I can't understand why I let it?
