hello miz :-) not sure yet it's something been thinking about for a while .. I think alot of other groups meet once a month maybe that's where to start? wanted to see what interest i got first ill maybe put advert in local paper too ... would like it to be a positive group that focuses (lol) on coping strategies etc and improving things .. if we can help each other (nhs help is limited here they have hardly a clue) nhs problems and ways to make things easier sounds good whats your views :-) is there nothing local to you either ?

Might be worthwhile talking to the organisers of other support groups to learn from their experience. I think planetdave runs one in Manchester and there's also one in Southampton run by Lisa Osborn ( southampton-adhd-support-group.webs.com). I'm sure they'd be happy to give advice to someone who wants to set up their own.

I know there are several in the Black Country wanting a meet - it's a bit of a slog for travel which can put people off. I dithered for about a year before taking the plunge and it turns out I completely wasted it since it proved very easy. What I considered - Location - where is easiest to access? Some need public transport and some need parking.
- Venue - is it going to cost, what are it's limitations?
- Who to address? Do you want the entire ADHD community, with it's divisions, or do you want a homogeneous group?
- When? Daytimes are good for parents but evenings good for singles and workers. Weekends are busy in so many ways.
I considered city centre (bad parking, expensive venues unless you use a pub or coffee house) but plumped for a major shopping centre with good transport links and sitting in a coffee shop when they weren't busy. I also wanted early in the week since fewer people have commitments then. This means costs are limited to transport and a drink which is pretty fair. I used this site to advertise (be cheeky - it's what its here for) and also word of mouth for those I knew who don't use the site. Other venues to consider are libraries and charities. I've since moved into a charity which means we now have a room to ourselves which is subsidised by the charity which also supplies simple drinks. You can see in the meetings sub forum how I go about things. You've really got to be willing to sit somewhere and have nobody show up - ADHDers are notoriously poor at showing up or letting you know they're going to show up so you might have to take a couple of stabs at it before anything happens. It took a bit of nerve and determination but the reward has been tremendous - month on month the group has expanded and everyone has been pleased with it - it sorts itself out since ADHDers tend to have problems keeping quiet! I've now tapped into the areas voluntary sector network which has noticeboards which might be seen by potential users. You can frequently find links to the voluntary sector via your local councils website. Use everyone! You could also set up a Facebook page.

Hi thanks for the reply been chewing this one over for a while now .. definitely going to do it Ill have a think about the best location and report back, not sure if just adults or children - prob both i would have thought as there is nothing in this area at the moment... Do you structure the meetings? focus on helping strategies etc? NHS help etc? If i start a support group say in July date not confirmed yet - would anyone be interested? Ill decide the date and location and time - ill also put an advert in the local paper. Kind regards Manda
