Hi - I'm Jan, and I'm new to ADDUK
I'm 60 years old and just discovered ADD in adults a couple of weeks ago. It ticks so many boxes! It makes sense of so much !
My initial reaction to it was relief, because there is a name and a reason why I've been struggling with life for so many years and never seemed to be getting anywhere.
My next reaction was sadness over a whole lot of lost opportunities.
Then came anger, 'cos, if I'd found out sooner, then life could have been so different, so much easier.
Now there's the tears. Frustration? Sorrow? Or just feeling sorry for myself ? Don't know. Moods are all over the place.
I'm so grateful to have found your website. From what I've seen so far it is going to be a valuable resource as I face the next hurdle - getting diagnosed.
Thank you for the encouragement and support it gives. Hopefully I'll be able to contribute to it and help others when I feel a bit more stable myself.
With gratitude :-D

Hello everybody! This is the first message on this board ever. If we need more boards we can set them up but for now we'll just have the one. Please remember that this board can come up on search engines, so we strongly suggest you register with a nickname and keep your e-mail address private. There are very few rules, but please try to respect others and hold back the urge to go on the attack (perhaps leave it 24 hours before replying to something annoying?). Please feel free to start conversations... Hi I have a thirty five year old son. He has been an ADHD sufferer since very young. The term didn't seem to be recognised in those days. In actual fact when I took him to our GP because of his hyperactive nature, I was told that he was a very naughty boy and needed to be disciplined. He was then told by our district nurse that he was a gifted child and that he could join a club which we attended on Saturday mornings, big mistake, we were completely ignored and it was the biggest clique. His teacher recommended an educational psychiatrist who told us that he has an above average intelligence, and gets frustrated, but nothing further came of this. About two years ago he walked out from his job after being unable to cope with a telephone call as he gets very confused and cannot deal with things that upset him. I caught him one morning trying to take his life. I called NHS direct who called an ambulance. The hospital Psychiatrist was great to talk to and he promised to look into the ADHD but unfortunately nothing came back and our GP (not the original one) does not want to know. My son is now on incapacity benefit and has actually attended the Queen Elizabeth Foundation and took a course in Horticulture for one year. QEF were fantastic, but this course was only for a year. Now my son does attend job clubs and there is a voluntary Horticulture job in the spring. Meanwhile, he is still very depressed and obese as food seems to be a comfort to him but is not doing any good to his health. However, he likes to go out for walks. He doesn't have many friends. He is a very negative person and complains about everything. If anyone can help and advise on where I need to go from here, I would be very greatful as my husband and I are at our wits end.

1) Hello and welcome to madness central 2) Putting it in the only words I can ------ Fucking hell!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I knew I had a twin brother somewhere............ Except he's still achieved more than me.....................lol. Now, once everyone waddles back to their keyboards, there will be info flying everywhere. Best thing to do, is get your son's ass onto this site. He can read a few postings in the general and lounge areas, he will soon fit right in and get the answers. Now it would be good to know which area you live in as well.

Unfortunately, my Son doesn't want to use this site as yet, but I am relaying messages to him. So maybe he will one day. Hope 2010 will be better for you.

Hi I'm a newbie and as tempting as it was to be a voyeur and not post anything, I thought what the hell - I want to change things so this is a start. So here is my post. I've suspected that I may have ADD for a while, just to explain the way I feel and my behaviour/habits/cock-ups since my late teens. I think I was looking for an excuse for my more recent failures with work too. I have been trying to complete my End of Year Review for work (something my work is very hot on) - which I have already been given an extension on after admitting I've been struggling with mild depression. My extension elapsed on Xmas Eve, so I had in mind to finish the paperwork during my Xmas break and email this evening. Of course as much time as I've had, it just hasn't got done. Rather ironically in an attempt to kill time I finally got round to reading into AADD. Reading some of the symptoms on a different website www.addandadhd.co.uk really opened things up for me - I felt an enormous sense of release and recognition. I'm staying at my folks for Xmas - so I went to get some air, think about things and then I came home and balled my eyes out. After getting that out of my system - then I stumbled across this forum and reading the post about the 27 symptoms gave me even more certainty that I have unlocked something inside me. Although the review paperwork is still a mess of jumbled half finished bulletpoints - I'm going to come clean to my manager tomorrow and try to get a GP appointment. I know compared to some of the other posts that I've read I'm very lucky. But I've felt miserable and underachieving for my entire adult life - hope I can start to dissect the problem and deal with it. Not quite ready to talk to my folks about things tonight as will start blubbery, so decided to share with you good people. Thanks, J

Hello Deacs
The procedure for being diagnosed is available in the site library, if you need help finding it just let us know.
I'd be wary of telling your boss unless you are absolutely certain it will be beneficial, it might precipitate a negative cascade effect.
Good luck with your journey.

Hi. I can't believe I have got to 39 without realising what it actually is that is "odd" about me. I can't believe I have finally found out there are other people that are "odd" in similar ways. Please don't be offended by my saying "odd", in the last few years I have accepted my own "oddness" and to be frank, there are some good sides to it! Anyway, hello to all, and I look forward to finding out alot more. I have had a look round the site already and I think it is impressively ironic how organised the site is! Looking forward in particular to the thread where the article links are. Emily

hello nice to meet you ;D you need to go back to the gp armed with the NICE guidlines and list of symptoms (which can be found on this site) and demand a refferal to an adhd specialist, having 3 children with adhd should be enough to get a refferal if your having problems too! gps can be very not understanding and so can general psychs, but the goal is just to get to a specialist. my gp recently said to me that i was doomed from birth as my parents have mental health problems and that everyone in the world cant be organised other wise it would be a boring place! to which i responded that it may be a boring place but just an ounce of organisational skils would improve my life greatly. anyway ive got an appointment with a specialist on march 11th so i dont care too much what this gp said to me. good luck with your journey and i hope you manage to get help before starting college as i know from experience that it can be very hard. but persevere if you can because it is worth it (if only i could listen to myself

...my gp recently said to me that i was doomed from birth as my parents have mental health problems... It is unbelievable what GPs say sometimes. How on earth could anyone think that having parents with mental health problems make you less in need of treatment than more? ADHD seems to be quite likely to be inherited, and it does respond to treatment, so your decision to ignore your GP and carry on regardless seems quite right!

Hello to everyone,
This site seems to be the way forward regards getting solutions help and support for the condition.
Although I have not been officially diagnosed with AADD I'm currently in the process of getting help through my GP who has referred my case to the Maudsley. I'm not getting my hopes up but it's a start.
Since becoming aware that there is such a thing as AADD only last year I feel very much as though a huge weight has been removed from my shoulders. While I'm cautious about self diagnosis I am convinced my life has been blighted by the symptoms associated with (inattentive) type AADD. I certainly tick all the boxes regards symptoms going back into childhood. I feel as though I have finally discovered what my problem is and it is almost a relief.
I'm glad I found you guys here what ever happens its nice to know I'm not alone. What is very interesting to me reading some of the threads on here is how similar peoples experiences are from the actual symptoms and the impact they have had on their lives but also getting some help and the massive problems involved in getting treatment. There is a mountain to climb!
Anyway first thread complete and another step in the right direction.
Matt (York)

Hi Matt
Welcome to the forum - I'm sure you will find it helpful - there are a lot of supportive people on here!!
Well done for getting a referral to the Maudsley - sounds as though your Gp might be supportive plus your local Primary care Trust, who must have agreed to fund the referral.
I say this to most people, if you haven't already looked at the video section, look at Russell Berkley's video - very informative.
Look forward to hearing more about your referral - keep us posted.

Hi Annie and thanks for the welcome,
The first time I went to my GP (different to my current one) she was very vague and didn't really have a clue as to what I was talking about. She suggested that; I didn't I want a label and the impact this would have on my medical history regards employment etc. That was a year or so ago.
I finally said to my wife I can go on pretending that there isn't anything wrong and struggle on as I had for the past 40 odd years or I could press on with getting some help. My new GP investigated and found there was no provision in my area for AADD or at least getting a consultation, it was actually me who suggested the Maudsley to him and he went on and wrote to them. I'm still waiting to see what the outcome will be but of course I will let you all know how I get on with this.
Matt

Hi destinycamel
Welcome to the forum!!
Not sure I can offer any advice on your student loan forms - what about asking the learning support unit at the University to help you with this?
I think you'll find many kindred spirits on here. Just wanted to say there is a pilot Adult Adhd clinic running in Newcastle so if you want to pusue an assessment you can ask your Gp to refer you to Dr Mishra at the Collingwood Court clinic at St nicholas Hospital.
Good luck if that's the route you decide to take.

Hi everyone,
I was diagnosed with ADHD when I was 28 by a psyhcologist. That was 4 years ago now, still in the same boat. I have become more self aware, and more educated about ADHD, but I have recieved no medical support whatsoever. I'm mainly in good spirits, although, I kind of feel in limbo; - I have a diagnosis but no way of moving forward. I still have the same problems with day to day life that I have always had. Now I have a valid "excuse" for the way I am, but no support to move forward and do the simple things that "normal" people do.

Hi there Lindsayloo and welcome to the forum ! Cant believe you have no meds but maybe you should go back to GP and ask to be referred to a qualified ADHD professional ! You could get in touch with the PCT in your area ! Where do you live ?

Hey Sheena,
Thanks for the welcome. I don't know what a PCT is lol.
The psychologist who diagnosed me told me that treatment for ADHD was only available for kids up to the age of 18. She recommended that my GP prescribed me some anti anxiety pills, which she duly did. I have been on the anti dep, Citalopram, for the last 4 years. It has reduced some of my anxiety, but alas hasn't helped me in the slightest with any of my ADHD symptoms.
Oh PS, I am in Scotland. Where are you?

Hi I live in New Malden which is not far from Wimbledon ! I was born in Dunfermline in Fife ! There is a new Adult ADHD centre in Edinburgh ! Check out the main board ! Will find it and send to you ! Your GP is wrong and you should tell them about the New Nice Guidelines on ADHD which includes adults ! I printed out the parents guide which is only 27 pages and it may be worthwhile giving a copy to your GP as others may benefit from it ! Keep your chin up ! We will get you there !
