Hi everyone, and thanks for organising this forum, only been on it a few days and its already been really useful for me.
I live in Manchester, in my 30s, and am undiagnosed but I believe I am mainly ADHD innattentive type.
I went to my GP last night, armed with the NHS symptom checklist and the Nice guidelines. Fortunately, the locum GP seemed fairly understanding and said that he didn't need to see any of these and that based on what I'd told him, and as it is affecting my everyday life he's referring me to the general 'Mental Health Services' and that they would decide who I should see. I told him to make sure he mentioned ADHD on the form he fills in. He said he would 'tick all the relevent boxes on the form'.
My history:
Nicknamed 'dozy' and 'nocturnal' at school. Very scatty. Can't get anything done unless its desperately urgent, or higly interesting to me. And its either Hyperfocus, or zero focus. Always losing/forgetting things. Have been labelled as 'weird' by several people, including a family member and a close friend. One of my worst symptoms over the last 10 years or so is chronic overworking, just to keep up with things, so I am often exhausted. I've been councilled and treated/medicated for anxiety/depression a few times in the past. THe first lot of councilling (2004, during my PhD) didn't really help that much, the councillor drew lots of pictures of the cycle of anxiety I was in, based on my dad labelling me as lazy as a child/teenager.
I then went to the disability services at my university, who screened me for dyslexia and it came out positive. My problems were found to be with poor working memory and processing speed. I found that the assistence I received after that was helpful in some ways, but not a complete match for my needs.
More recently, two different people from 2 different areas of my life told me they thought I might be ADHD, (both unprompted). So I looked it up, and I feel this is definately me. When I went for the dyslexia screening in 2005, the advisor asked if I had problems with concentration, and I thought about all the (what I now know as) 'hyperfocusing' I do at work, and said "no". But now I know the full story, I realise that I set up a lot of ways of doing things in my day-to-day life, and that if anything disturbs these, or if I'm doing something new, I'm totally scatty and disorganised. It can be expensive too!!!... In the last year I've lost 2 i-phones (both uninsured), and 2 weeks ago, me and my boyfriend had to drive around at 2am to find a hotel with spare rooms, as I'd lost my house keys.

Hi, I am a newbie. Have realised that something "wasn't right" with me for years but couldn't put my finger on what it was. Thank God for this site! I have had a read through the site and it is like reading about myself. It spurred me on to go the drs and I am now waiting for an assessment.
My main probs are disorganisation to the extreme (flylady is helping),losing things on a regular basis, and the ability to stick to anything i.e a long term job, courses etc. I have left many jobs over the years, started courses and left them as I just couldn't cope. My last job was as a waitress which is probably one of the worst things you can do with ADD, lets just say some of the food ended up on me aswell as the customers plate! I am really hoping I do get help so I can go back to college and finish a course and get a job. I have two children whom I adore but unfortunately get impatient with particularly when i'm hyperfocussing on something so I want to get help for their sakes too.
Anyway will stop blathering on,just wanted to introduce myself and looking forward to finding out more :-)

Hi my name is Ailsa, I have just found this website after discoving that I am sure I am ADD, I have always known something was wrong, I had decided in the last two year it had to be bi-polar and had gone to the doctor who was very understanding and had refered me to a phyciatrist. It was my mum who keeped pushing that I had ADHD I didnt know enough about the condition and just assumed that anyone who was hyper would have a lovely tidy home and a place for everything you know the rest. Anyway I also have a tic dissorder and while looking for information on my condition I discoverd that 50 % of people with tic dissorders also have ADD. I went and Looked at the symptoms and it was like a light went on for me. It has only been just over a week since I saw that. I got all my family and friends to do tick boxs on weather they thought I had any symptoms. The response was overwhelming, I took the symptoms and the tick box chart to my docs, She was very intreasted and supportive but unsure what to do. She dicided to write a letter to the phyciatric team and hope they know how to help me. I am keen to be medicated my life at the moment is very topsy turvy and I do believe meds would help. I have bought a self help book off amazon called "Your not lazy, your not Crazy, your not stupid" I have also started gingko biloba, any one had any succsess with it ?
Anyway thats my story waiting to get diagnoised but I am 100% certain I am ADD, best realife is that I have felt very much like a failure all year, I am 35 and it felt like my life was slipping away and I was not in the driving seat, I feel I am back in the driving seat now, I just hope that I get the support out with my GP service that I need.
Thanks for reading Ailsa x

Hi CGG Let your GP know you'd like to see the consulting psychiatrist rather than a psychologist or MH nurse - it'll save you a lot of time since what you're looking for is a referral to an ADHD specialist from the psychiatrist.

Hi, I did it all the wrong way round - posted a couple of times but I got here in the end!
I was diagnosed with ADHD about a year ago, but then I moved to a different area and had to start again. Fortunately my new doctor listened to me and referred me directly to the only psychiatrist round here that deals with adult ADHD. Although it meant a 6 month wait before I could see him I was glad I didn't get the run around when I got there. He recommended this forum to me and I've been lurking for a while, rather gratefully reading other peoples comments and feeling like I understand myself, and my daughter (12 yo, also with ADHD), a little more with each shared experience. There's also a little forgiveness going on as a result which is novel. So thank you all. I haven't started treatment yet - I've had a blood test to ensure I'm healthy etc and am due to go back to see the psychiatrist in December. He said he'd be able to prescribe medication then and suggested I might want to see what was out there and tell him what I think would suit me - which a very refreshing approach! Anyway, I could blather on for ever but I won't. Suffice to say that I'm happy to have found this forum invaluable already and I look forward to reading more, and contributing (when I remember!!)

Hello. Would you mind if a yank joins up? I've read the postings on your boards and already feel attached to all of you! Anyway, in the US, we don't have very good online support groups for adults w/ADHD and their families. Hi Manxie Im new too. This is a brilliant site based in the US, which I have lurked on since my diagnosis in July. www.addforums.com/forumsor www.addforums.com - if the link doesnt work. Actually its so good, I may post it up for everyone in its own thread. x

Hello, Im Tara and Im a newbie too..
Im 37 and was diagnosed privately in July as my employers were hassling me over lateness and not completing some training for my job. They turned out to be a bunch of ***** and after numerous meetings over their management and treatment of me, I realised I had a DDA case and tried to sue them. This is all the more stressful as my line manager was once a freind and I guess I let her comments go unchecked for too long.
Anyway, Im now out of work and starting a new med as of tomorrow or Weds - when I see my psych. Concerta has helped a bit but I just cant get out of bed right now and just catching up sleep after such a stressful year at work and solicitor bills!!
I really want to get my life back on track as although Ive been successful with my two careers so far, getting diagnosed has moved all the goalposts again and I want to live my dreams again. Im getting my soul back I guess and trying to figure out what these are without wading through the fog of cloudiness, anxiety and panic.
Its funny how my anxiety has gone now I have my adhd label. Not knowing the answer to your problems is one of the hardest things of all.
Good luck everyone. We can kick this and live happier xxxx

Well, I hesitate to come between you and your appliance (does it use vibration technology as well), but seriously, what the hell is the ballooon thingy? It's cute, but I don't get it. Maybe if it was bigger....

Hi there, everyone. I don't have ADHD myself, but my partner of 8 years does. She's English, I'm American, we live in Outer London.
She was diagnosed privately in 2006 at the age of 38. We are currently trying to move her care onto the NHS for reasons I will detail in the appropriate thread.
