He is really bad at paying attention, keeping track of time, etc. - even more so than I am. He’s been diagnosed with depression but I really think he also has ADD (he does too). The thing is, he doesn’t want to bother going through the diagnosis process and keeps on asking me if he could have some of my elvanse. I always say no because I don’t know how it’d affect him and don’t want to feel responsible for anything that might go wrong.
I keep telling him to go to the GP and get referred for a diagnosis but he’s just so lazy/demotivated.
Any advice?

Hi adhdude Congrats on your job! No advice except to continue what you're doing. .gently encourage him to get referred for assessment. .and don't let him try any of your meds.

Tell him you don't want his death on your conscience.
That said, several of my friends appear to have tried it, somehow. Most of them report effects that are alien to me.

I started a reply somewhere but it got long and not finished and probably disappeared into the ether now too, so . . .
How about trying to get him to check out other remedies of low dopamine, as in get him to eat more protein, and try stuff like ginkgo ~ it does help. I drink coffee for the same effect, but that's not good if you are affected by caffeine.

Tell him you need all your Elvanse yourself - that's why it's been prescribed to you!

Thanks for all your advice! I've told him to get more sleep, exercise in the morning, etc. but he's just finding it all too difficult. He doesn't like caffeine but I could tell him about ginkgo - can't say I've heard of that one before but it sounds interesting.
I'm really worried for him and feel bad he wouldn't be able to get any medications in time for his exams because it could really help him. I'm tempted to just give him my spare pills from weekends etc. that I never used but I'm just too worried about how they might affect him and how they might interact with his antidepressants. I guess the best thing is to just really push him to get referred for a diagnosis and to help him with his exams in the meantime.
It's really frustrating that the NHS makes it such a long-winded process - the people who need to go through the process most also struggle the most to go through it. I don't blame my friend for putting this all off so much.

I'm really worried for him and feel bad he wouldn't be able to get any medications in time for his exams because it could really help him. Exams? Is he at university or college? If so, has he talked to the student counselling/support service? There may be something they could do either in easing the path to a diagnosis or in helping with the exams (extra time, postponing?). Or both.

If so, has he talked to the student counselling/support service? There may be something they could do either in easing the path to a diagnosis or in helping with the exams (extra time, postponing?). Or both. He is at university - he's in his 3rd year of a 4 year Master's course. He didn't attend his 3rd year exams - he literally just didn't go and didn't even tell the university anything. I had to reach out to the department and disability services myself and they let him do the exams last summer instead. He didn't go to those either and he's having to take an extra year now to finish things off (they won't charge him the 9k though). They've already given him lengthy extensions for coursework and postponed his exams twice. Yesterday he was telling me that he wants to get the exams postponed again but I’ve told him not to. I told him to ask for a mentor but he doesn’t want one. He says he’d rather I help him instead - funny how that works considering I have a mentor myself haha. I didn’t think that student services could speed up the diagnosis but that’s an interesting point. It might be worth him asking them about that I suppose. Thanks for that.
