Hi Folks,
Not sure what I want to say... Everything!
EDIT: I did write everything! Now deleted... ;-)
Just to say instead that I'm enjoying reading through all the old posts...
Might feel more entitled to reply to active threads when / if I get a diagnosis.

Thanks :-)
Am struggling a bit at the moment. I guess its a well trodden path!
I recently realised I may be ADHD and it seems like I've been thrown a lifeline.
But it will be ages before I get assessed and even then I may not get the diagnosis I want/ need!
ADHD is my new hyper-focus - pity it isn't actual work ;-(
Now trying to stop thinking about it and reading up 24/7
Worried I've got too much invested in this now...
So I'm trying to crack on by assuming my self-diagnosis is correct and trying non-medicated ways forward.
Positive vibes to anyone else waiting for a diagnosis!
Its like being on trial somehow - the sentence being either a second chance at life or a metaphorical death.
I fear I am actually just a lazy useless waste of space
Grrrr........

Hi jp If you've read around the forum, you'll have seen that it's quite usual to feel that you're just clutching at straws, deluded, making something out of nothing etc. . . The majority of people on here who think they have ADHD, go on to get a diagnosis. ADHD is not something you *want* to have, but it can be an enormous relief to finally have an answer to why you struggle with things others seem to do easily. Waits for assessment are often really long . . .and we don't like waiting! I think it's a good idea to self-diagnose and try to understand yourself better and to try some coping strategies while waiting. . .even if you don't have ADHD, it's always good to make some positive changes in your life. Although I have a diagnosis, I didn't get much benefit from stimulant meds and there's no ADHD Service in the city I moved to shortly after dx, so I'm trying to live *with* ADHD in a more positive way. Support groups can be really helpful and most welcome people who don't have a diagnosis yet. It helps just to talk to other people who understand

Haha
Was feeling listened to and understood - unusual 😁
Currently sitting in my car waiting for my assessment!
And feeling a little nervous shall we say. But excited too.
To finally get a diagnosis is HUGE. Whatever the funk they diagnose!
Fingers crossed it's ADD rather than mad, bad and lazy.

Good luck, can we assume you went private?

I did go private.
Couldn't face the wait - I'm far enough behind as it is :-(
The GP said he didn't think I had ADHD "Maybe some kind of personality disorder." and referred me to the mental health team for a general assessment.
The mental health nurse didn't rule out ADHD but thought I had GAD
Plus there's no referral unit in Herefordshire and was told that the CCG only fund out-of-area assessment in exceptional cases (and I'm no more exceptional than the thousands of other people with adult adhd in the county!!!)
Can't really afford it! But as I mentioned somewhere, if I can start functioning (e.g. sending off invoices for a start!) then the money will come in...
The private diagnosis was ADHD - inattentive type
HUGE relief. MAHOOOSIVE in fact!

Just read some of your posts. Sorry to see you've had problems getting a diagnosis. I prepared VERY well - copious notes. But didn't use them. The questions came too fast, and as with your experience he kept cutting me off before I'd got to the nitty gritty. However he was was being very wide-ranging in his questions, I guess trying to rule out other causes. At one point I thought he thought I maybe had ODD or ASPD. I forgot to tell him half of what I wanted too - including missing out many obvious childhood symptoms - but he was convinced non-the-less *phew*
It was still definitely worth preparing as I would have struggled to find memories on the spot - 40 odd year old memories are pretty hazy and he mostly asked about stuff from ages 5-11! In the week between booking the appointment and getting assessed I was thinking about it all the time, talking to old friends and relatives - and memories kept surfacing randomly - all of which I jotted down. I'd advise anyone else to do the same.

Wouldn't take long to read my posts - there aren't that many. There are many I likely should have posted, but... you know! I kept going at it - think there's been a diagnosis, but no one has actually said... have meds though!
