Hi everyone, I was diagnosed last week, am 48, so it's been many years of struggles. I came to my diagnosis having struggled with anxiety and depression since my early twenties. Thankfully a psychiatrist picked up on all my work moves (23 full time jobs in as many years), as well as a similar number of personal courses and projects ranging from law to accountancy to psychology and philosophy as well as software programming (my current thing!), musical instruments, drawing, fad diets... you name it I've probably tried it. I was due to have an assessment on the NHS but waiting times were 9 months plus so went private. Am due to start Methylphenidate, but a little nervous as I have not always had great results with anti-depressants in particular. Hoping it will help. J

Hi jb21 I was diagnosed at 48 too! Have you been prescribed short or long lasting methylphenidate (mph)? Either way, unlike antidepressants, mph works quickly and leaves your system quickly so if there's any effect you don't like, it will be gone in a few hours. Don't worry if you don't feel anything much at first, you should be started on a low dose to see how well you tolerate it and gradually build up build up until you find an optimal therapeutic dose . . .or not . . .you may have to try several meds until you find something suitable. . . and don't pay too much attention to people who say that their particular med is the best, or the one you're on is the worst . .it's different for everyone Medication is not a magic solution, but it can help a lot of people (unfortunately I'm not one of them) you also need to look at your life through the lens of ADHD and accept yourself and put some useful coping strategies in place. Has your GP agreed to prescribe your meds under shared-care with your private consultant? I also find talking to other people with ADHD very helpful. . .support groups can be good.

Hi vagueandrandom, thanks for your welcome and re-assuring words about the meds. I have a few too many bad experiences over the last few years... but have been prescribed a low dose and will take it slow!!
