Hi all
Does anybody know of any affordable (i.e. £500 or under) private psychiatrists who can diagnose ADHD and prescribe medication in or around Newcastle-upon-Tyne? The only ones I've been able to find all charge £700-£1000 and I'm not sure if I can afford that.

I've been told that the waiting list could be over a year and technically speaking I don't actually live in the Newcastle trust area, so I'm having to go through the hoops of seeing an unrelated local psychiatrist beforehand before they'll even put me on the ADHD waiting list.

Things to consider when going private: The cost of the diagnostic assessment
(presuming they give you a diagnosis) isn’t the end of charges. . .
Private prescriptions can be very expensive and you might have to try different doses,
or several different meds before you find something that works for you.
You might have to pay for follow-up appointments while trialling meds.
Before you go private ask your GP if they would be willing to prescribe under shared care
with the private specialist. . .they don’t have to agree, which means more private prescriptions.
You can be on the NHS waiting list while having private treatment.

I'm sorry to hear that the waiting list could be more than a year. That's disgraceful but unfortunately is becoming too common these days! Without wishing to complicate matters further, it might be a good idea also to read through our information and suggestions for help in evaluating the quality of private ADHD services since they can vary. Here's a link to our post: Important information for people seeking an ADHD assessmentI would also suggest that while you're looking for a private specialist you should at the same time get yourself put on the NHS waiting list as it's better to have several irons in the fire Good luck and feel free to keep us informed and to ask other questions!

But I wondered if you found anywhere in the Newcastle area? I was badly let down by the NHS mental health services - waited over 2 years to be refused a diagnosis due to the fact there was no supporting evidence from my childhood (no records = no diagnosis!) 😳
