Hello, Based in Southampton and only just starting on looking at diagnosis. I realise that I could go private for a diagnosis, and there is an Adult ADHD person based at the Priory in Marchwood, Hampshire not too far from me. While looking for information on NHS options, I came across this FOI request that seems to suggest that I can't get support unless I have another mental health issue as well. A) Am I reading this correctly? B) What does this mean if I get a private diagnosis? www.southamptoncityccg.nhs.uk/download.cfm?doc=docm93jijm4n2251.pdf&ver=4678

As this is quite an old post now, it may be too late (heaven knows why nobody replied before), but it doesn't surprise me that such NHS guidelines as you found are bureaucratically nonsensical. A) It does indeed appear to say that they will agree to treat ADHD as an adjunct of other 'more widely understood' comorbid disorders. I'd expect that this would mean that attributing symptoms to the comorbid as primary, allows them to feel like it's in their comfort zone, administratively. So, you can easily hit on something as commonly comorbid with ADHD as Depression (can be labelled Major Depressive Disorder) and it just gets written up as taking the lead. This actually happened for me with my G.P., who wrote on my referral application "Depression with suspected ADHD." [took a while to get the GP to do the referral, and then a couple of months to get the now typically ridonkulous reply that I could get a specialist ADHD assessment with NHS, if i waited for... 2 YEARS!! lolzzzzz! :'<] B) Private diagnosis won't be affected by this information, if the private clinician (make sure it's a *Psychiatrist* who is qualified to prescribe, and not any other kind of Dr/therapist) knows already how to 'shake hands' with the NHS system. And, if they are a UK specialist in ADHD for any length of time, they undoubtedly will. I think I can guess who the Southampton Priory specialist probably is (can't name the Dr here, according to rules), and she's got lots of reviews on ' i want great care dot org' with details as to how ongoing treatments carried forth with NHS services.
