I'm having an incredibly hard time getting the school to help my son and they only want him on medication but we are awaiting a formal diagnosis. What can I do?

Hi, I'm sorry to hear that your son and you are having a hard time. I really wish i could help you more, but i don't have kids so i don't know much about dealing with schools. What i do know is that, as someone with ADHD, i had a terrible time at school -hated almost every minute, so you really have my sympathy. It sounds like you need some advice about your sons rights, and some help in interacting with the school. Try reading this website and see if it's a help: childlawadvice.org.uk/educationalso, maybe try the citizens advice bureau. www.citizensadvice.org.uk/family/educationAlso, you will need an integrated approach to improving your sons problems, including perhaps, medication, educational psychologists, counsellors, dietary advice, memory aids, timers, speech-to-text software to make it easier to write essays etc... If the school's relationship with you and your son has become really bad, he may benefit from moving to a school where he can build new relationships with teachers and other pupils without the baggage of his past problems. try to see that as a positive step, not a failure. -After all, we wouldn't benefit from staying in a job where the other employees didn't like us! You don't mention how old he is, for education -the younger the better, if he's 8 you might be able to make some real changes to his life and save his education. If he's 17 you might be better off trying to focus on getting him a job for when he leaves school. The bridge between school and work is really hard, especially for people who haven't been successful, and a short period of unemployment can easily grow into a long one, which can lead to depression, anxiety, eating/drinking too much etc... So if you know anyone who works in a trade involving physical, outdoors type work, especially if paid weekly (to make managing money easier), see if you can get your son involved with that, don't let him get a job in an office or call centre! Anyway... sorry for the long winded reply! good luck! Matt
