Someone on an ADHD FB group was asking why Adderall isn't Licenced in the UK, so I got lost in Google . . . .
Shire, who own the Patent for Adderall, didn't pay to License it in the UK before the Patent expired in 2009.
It costs a lot to License a medicine and the UK wasn't a big enough market pre-2009 to make it worth their while.
Even if Shire Licensed Adderall now, they wouldn't make much money because once Licensed and approved by NHS it would allow generics to be made
and prescribed in the UK too as NHS approve the chemical make-up, not brand. Shire has the Patent and Licence for Elvanse, so it's making money from that.
Adderall can be prescribed, but it's expensive as it is produced in America and import taxes are high, so NHS are unlikely to do so.
Some private specialists will prescibe on a private prescription, but it's unlikely a GP will be allowed to take over shared care, due to cost.
£388 per month on private prescription was quoted.

Have you considered the possibility that you may be drawn to fear mongering?

Drawn? No. And certainly not taken for a ride by a big red bus with £350million extra a week for the NHS plastered on the side Anyways, maybe tomorrow common sense will prevail and the whole thing will be cancelled. See, I can do optimism too!

Adderall is a liscensed preperation of specific amphetmine salts, reformulated from obertrol and marketed for ADHD when they removed Meth from it (the diet drug obertrol contained methamphetamine in the same proportions)
The specific salt preperation is all thats licensed.
Amphetamine is unpatentable, generic dextroamphetmine is prescribed world over, and very cheap to manufacture
But Methylphenidate has been shown to be less harmful long term than amphetamines in the brain (save for vyvanse but that is just dextroamphetamine with an aminoacid attached). Dopamine reuptake inhibitors (few exist; methylphenidate and cocaine are the main two that exist) are always the better choice (not cocaine duh) than releasers like (amphetamine (usually adderall in the USA they don't have generic medicines really, they don't know what paracetmol / aceteminophen is; it's just tylenol), methamphetamine (prescribed as desoxyn in america))
Strange thing is that cocaine abusers have a lower incidence of alzheimers, likely only a corrolation but it is suprising I'm not saying anyone should do cocaine it's just the only other DRI with a long history of use, mehtlyphenidate mirroros the structure of it somewhat

Just wanted to say, thanks for the useful info Vagueandrandom. My friend in America has been on adderall since being diagnosed in her teens (think she tried ritalin first but she had bad experiences with it?).
Sounds like a few different pros and cons with UK licensing rules and as you say, if they're making money from Elvanse, may not be much motivation to take the gamble on plunging investment into Adderall when it could quickly be copied by unbranded competitors. Can't believe it costs so much per month - I have no experience as am undiagnosed, but my fingers are crossed that the alternative options here might be better!
