Hi,
After a private assessment yesterday, I’ve been diagnosed with severe ADHD Combined Type.
The psychotherapist I saw isn’t able to prescribe medication.
So I guess my question is, where do I go from here? I had been referred via the NHS (UK) but they have such long waiting times. How do I move forward with trying medication?
Can anyone help?

I'd geuss ask your psychotherapist to send your GP a letter with the diagnosis and a recommendation for treatment, then hopefully your GP can prescribe the medication for you.
I say this but it's just my assumption. I'm really not sure to be honest.
Hope you get it sorted.

Usually have to be diagnosed by a psychiatrist for it to count, unfortunately.

Hello
I paid for my adhd assessment on psychiatry-uk and the guy I spoke with was a senior psychiatrist for the NHS, doing private work in his own time. He was able to prescribe medication privately for me, and also write to my GP to start them off with being able to routinely look after me (NHS prescriptions)
Hope that helps

In order to get a prescription, you will need to see a psychiatrist. Unfortunately, if you wish to get in quickly, you will need to go privately, the benefit being that this route can give almost immediate results. You should probably talk to your GP surgery first to find out whether there might be some way to expedite your position on the list.
However, I think that it will help you at least to start out educating yourself about Adult ADHD. It can provide much relief and context and understanding about what you have been experiencing all of your life.
If you are sort of desperate to get meds, I recommend going the private route. My life has changed in many significant ways since my diagnosis last year, and meds, though they are not a magic pill, have been an integral part of those changes. It has cost me a lot of money to get the correct meds and correct dosing, I can't lie about that. In my experience, it takes at least several visits before your meds are stabilised, though the clinics tend to downplay how long that can take, so you need to calculate the cost of each of those appointments. But those visits are actually necessary, as for me, the process of getting the proper medication has not been a quick or simple one.

igetboredeasy, I am sure that if you decided to go to a private psychiatrist, you could have your diagnosis sent over by NHS in advance of your appointment.

I just got diagnosed on Psychiatry-uk (about 2 hours ago) He was able to prescribe the medication. I'm not an expert by any means but they were relatively cheap (£360 for the consultation compared to some people asking £800+ with another £800 of follow ups) They did it over skype so i was at home. Pretty easy and convenient. I do feel like money well spent

I am still testing different medications four months into the treatment. May I ask what did they prescribe?

mamadedos i already have an NHS diagnosis I just do not know someone in private sector if i wanted to change medication if i move. It just seems that if you have a private prescription you cant be discriminated by the NHS and so wouldn't be discriminated against depending on the postcode lottery of the acceptance of diagnosis. I wouldn't want to be seen over Skype either i would want a doctor i could converse with and been vigilant of my diagnosis for safety reasons, although i can do my own blood pressure.

This is exactly what I want to know!
I was diagnosed by a psychologist through the NHS after a 2-3 year waiting list. At the time I was asked if I wanted to explore the medication route and they said if I did I would need to see a psychiatrist. At the time I was quite against the idea of medication.
I was diagnosed back in April 2017, since then I left my abusive ex boyfriend and moved to Cyprus in December 2017. I came back to the uk a few weeks ago to visit and have been stuck here due to the pandemic. I am having to do my job in Cyprus from home, my focus that is already bad in the office is far worse when trying to work from home. I will never be taken seriously as someone to progress in any business because of the amount of times I over sleep and am late for work. From being on a few adhd groups on Facebook I noticed a lot of people have really benefited from medication. I just want to be able to adult, focus on a career, be happy in my job. I fear I'm going to lose my job before I'm able to find a new one because of my many shortcomings. There are too many things I have difficulty with, I never have enough money to live.
How on earth can I get medication prescribed quickly, especially as there is now a pandemic?

Meryl I would try NHS first and explain over phone your situation and ask if you can get your prescription prescribed and explain your situation but if your stuck here I think your gonna have to call your embassy. If i was you I would go to your family GP before where you was seen in 2017 they will at least might remember you or verify your identity by other family members. Maybe you can arrange either embassy and GP to have you prescription shipped from Cyprus at worst they will probably make you pay an import tax, but maybe not if it is less than 3 months supply because that is what you can travel with. Why did you not take all your medication with you?
