Hello
My daughter (21) has a learning needs assessment via her university (London) that has identified ADD. We understand this is not a medical diagnosis - and her GP has said that the report she has is insufficient and that if she wishes to consider medication she needs a medical diagnosis.
As waiting lists are months long - and she will have probably completed her degree by the time she is seen - I'm exploring the private route. We don't have health insurance, so I want to be very sure that we understand what we are paying for, and if the costs I have been quoted are inline.
I have spoken to several clinics in London - and for example, the costs are in the region of £495 for a clinical diagnosis and summary letter
This does not include a treatment plan
I was told by one practice that a GP can use this diagnosis to refer to a NHS psychiatrist, who will develop the treatment plan - but, I assume we are back to waiting several weeks / months for that referral
Or we can return to the private clinic and pay for a treatment plan - c£200 for that second meeting, which included a prescriptions
There then follows a titration period while they tinker with the meds, which could be £200 per month for each meeting
Once settled, I think I understand that a shared care plan can be developed between the GP and private psychiatrist so that further repeat prescriptions are via the NHS doctor, and charged at NHS rates.
And in addition periodically, my daughter will need to see the private psychiatrist (£200) to make sure the dose is okay.
I have made the assumption that medication is the next step, although she has had some CBT, exercises, mindfulness etc - so is trying to self-treat as well.
Does this break down of costs and steps of the procedure sound right based on your experience?
With thanks in advance
