I have finally managed to get NHS ADHD assessment but it is scheduled for late February 2021. I am so fed up of waiting (been waiting since June) and decided that perhaps getting diagnosed privately and start with medication if needed through them would be a better course of action. Then in February attend my NHS assessment anyway and continue with meds if needed through NHS. Would NHS be ok with something like that? I called a private clinic in London and they said they wouldn't advise that, because NHS might react in a way to tell me to continue with my private practice instead and refuse to give me assessment/medication (private only would be a lot of money continuously, it is 850 GBP for the assessment only and around 500 per hour after). Does anyone has experience with this? Should I give up on private and wait for NHS or it doesn't matter?

Hi Lucy, I’m kind of in the same boat, after battling to get an assessment out of area for about 6 months I finally got on the waiting list July 2019. I rung up to get an update the other day and the waiting list was still 20 months from the referral date. So I’m looking at 2021 at the earliest, but I haven’t got a date yet.
I have been having a rougher time than usual so I have booked in for private assessment a week on Saturday! I feel like the pressure is off in some way because I’m going private, I’m not quite sure why but maybe that’s just me.
Mine is £595 for assessment then £195 for each hour after. if I go down the medication route I’m probably going to be looking between £1500 and £2000 in total. After speaking with my GP I can then go onto a shared care plan to hopefully cover or subsidise the cost of meds from there.
If I can finally get a diagnosis after years of counselling, CBT and Citalopram then I think it will be worth it for me to finally get the right treatment.
Good luck with whatever you choose, I don’t know if this helps or not. Its the first time I have been on here and I saw your post and it sounded so familiar!

I emailed the Bristol clinic and they told me they have been closed since March because of Covid and no plans to reopening soon or doing Skype type interviews.
I think 2021 is when they will open again but obviously they still need to work through backlog.
I ended up getting a diagnose over Skype via a private clinic cost me £550 and was pretty much instantly seen,
Not sure how I can transition to NHS now though as I think they have me over a barrel and charge me £250 every time I want to speak to a doctor.
