Hi, I’ve posted on here a few times previously but not for a while.
I had an appointment today through the NHS and I’ve finally been diagnosed with ADHD.
I’ve been started on 18mg of Concerta (Methlyfenidate). I’ve already taken 1 today.
I’m 28 years old and things have been getting worse for me so lately so this diagnosis is the new start I’ve needed for a long time.
It still hasn’t sunk in properly and I’m not 100% sure where I go from here so if anyone can give me some suggestions I’d appreciate that.
Obviously I’ll be getting support from the ADHD team for the next few months but it’s always better getting it from like minded people IMO.
For people still waiting for diagnosis, I feel your pain I really do, but just hang in there and if you’re struggling please do contact the mental health team that you’re dealing with. They are truly caring people who only want to do the best for you.

Hi Ray,
I initially went to see my GP about Tourette’s and the ADHD was secondary to that at the time.
But from my initial appointment last September-ish, I had an appointment with the local mental health team in November last year , and was put on the list in January.
Anyway things escalated recently and i was diagnosed early just 2 weeks ago, so the time it took was 1 year 2 months i think.
It was painful at times waiting for so long but old school reports helped me, so if you have anything like that bring it with you for supporting evidence.
Regards Adam

I think it massively depends on where you are based in the UK. I was referred by my GP at the end of November and have an assessment in January. We have no local services so using a virtual service that the NHS outsource to. Hope you have been to see your GP now 😊

Do you think it has sunk in now? I think even if you're 99% sure you have ADHD when you actually get it confirmed I can imagine it will knock you a bit and make you reflect on your life! I would suggest confiding in friends and family rather than struggling alone. They may be able to help and give you support and reassurance 😊

Hi Lottie,
You’re right about the location etc. I’m based in County Durham and the waiting list for assessment here is 3 years now, I was fast tracked because of a load of things going on in my life atm so I’m happy about that.
Honestly, before I was officially diagnosed I thought that id feel like a different person and suddenly everything will be better once i finally got the Dx, but truth is I didnt feel different at the time.
Saying that, I’ve just had my dosage for Concerta increased to 27mg as I’m still in the titration period. With meds however I am more confident and feel more confidence in my competency at work especially, my heart on sleeve disappears, and i can think more clearly for sure. Focus is a working progress but definitely able to concentrate better.
There’s no euphoria or anything like that but it is putting the brakes on in my thoughts and it makes me more mellow.
All this said, once the concerta wears off, all my ‘progress’ disappears. My doctor or whatever he is said that my next apt will possibly include a second prescription for an immediate release stimulant to top up once it’s worn off.
But I’m slowly but surely getting there. Sorry for the long winded reply 😬

Sounds like you have some positive results so far 😊 I have an assessment on 5th January as my GP referred me to psychiatry-UK as we have no local services. I hope you have a good next appointment, from reading other posts it has taken most people a few attempts to get the right medication with either increase or change to something else.

Hey I wanted to go through psychiatry right to choose but I was too impatient now so I paid lol. But now I have no treatment and I’m struggling, how does the tirtiation work? Do you feel you get a lot of support and does medicine help with impulses?

Hi Mazda, I bet you’re glad you eventually have the diagnosis. The titration period is basically every few weeks I’ll have an appointment to see how I’m doing. I started on 18mg for 2 weeks and now I’m on 27mg until 11th, and then I assume I’ll to go to 36mg. The effect is subtle and It wear off too soon for me so they said next time they’ll look at giving me an immediate release one to “top it up”. Impulsiveness is a still problem though but the main thing for me is i feel more confident in my self and abit more assertive. I am getting a lot of support from the NHS adhd team so I’m very grateful for that. So all good so far. Hope that helps Adam

I got diagnosed today too. I went private as I'm 45, can afford to and at my age you just want to get on with it anyway. Great to find this community and to hear the support. I've now got to speak to my GP and work out my medication and treatment options. I have a senior role in a global firm plus a busy family life - but I also suffer from long-term headaches and anxiety (25 years!) - I have had to do SO MUCH research to reach this point. I can get a bit cross about it, as I don't think GPs and neurologists looked for it. Having said that though, I think I am a great coper and masker after all these years! :-) Bloody exhausting though. Anyway - nice to have the diagnosis and maybe, like you Adam, I can get some treatment that finally works. I'll pop back and let you know. Joel

I hope the medication works great for you. I’m still titrating the dose at the moment however i feel calmer and more content when I’ve taken it. The way to describe for me is that the medication puts a lock and chain on the unhelpful things and lets me focus better on the relevant things, but the problem is that the meds wear off within 5/6 hours and they’re back as if they had never went away. But it’s looking promising! Please let us know how you get on with your treatment, as I’ve found this forum to be helpful for me and continues to be. Kind regards Adam

I had my appointment this week and was diagnosed with combined adhd. I haven't started with any meds yet but will start those in a few weeks.
How are you getting on now Adam? Have you changed meds or found a good balance?
Lottie 😊

Congratulations I am so happy to see that you have a diagnosis. Only people with ADHD or waiting to be diagnosed would get how much a diagnosis means, which is the frustrating thing when waiting. But thanks for sharing and giving me something positive to read. It makes me happy that there is now one less person feeling the way I do and gives me hope that maybe one day I will get there too. You’ve got this validation which is so important more than many things tbh and the meds do make a difference. I’ve just finished this months 27mg Concerta and my next appointment is tomorrow so I think they’ll increase it to 36mg. The biggest thing for me is I feel more competent which in turn increases my confidence. I’ve had no bad side effects and I think they might be trying me on a immediate release tablet along side Concerta as it wears off too soon for me. Hope you’re doing well! Adam

Ha have you been referred for assessment yet? Regards Adam
