Hi All, Im from Nottinghamshire, just diagnosed with ADHD, My GP called to say in the Notts area Stimulants to adults in this area are code RED and are not issued to adults with ADHD, IS THIS TRUE ?? I see on here other counties permit the use of stimulants.
So how do I win this battle for treatment for ADHD as an adult, I've yet to have a response from Psychiatry-UK upon this issue, I paid private for a quick service !!!
Regards to all, Please comment.

Well, my first instinct is that this sounds like an error or misunderstanding on their part. If they are part of the NHS then your GP can't just make up their own rules unless there are very specific reasons for them doing so, and if that extends to the whole Nottingham area then that sounds very fishy indeed. I would suggest asking your GP surgery if they know why stimulant medication is "code red" and why this is any different from anywhere else in the UK. Next job would be going higher up the chain. This does sound like a lot of bull***t to me, if you have a valid diagnosis then this should not be a problem. You might even want to consider registering with a GP outside the area if you can...? Anyway just a few thoughts, hope it helps.

I think 'Red List' drugs need authorisation by a specialist, so it means a GP can't prescribe them off their own bat. What is on the list in each area may be up to the chief pharmacist for the CCG or area.
Maybe your GP should contact the diagnosing clinician again?
Disclaimer: I don't work in the NHS, but this is my impression.

Hi, all, this is my first post here. Also, I'm from Canada so clueless about NHS or "Red List" drugs. However I did come across some recent NICE guidelines on ADHD which clearly say that methylphenidate or lisdexamphetamine are first line drugs for adults with ADHD. If this would help, here's the link: nice.org.uk/guidance/ng87/chapter/recommendations#medication
It makes sense that there could be some extra red tape for prescribing stimulants to patients. But what are the chances Nottinghamshire is somehow an exception to the NICE guidelines?

I've heard about this regarding Nottinghamshire . . .
Basically, different areas have different prescribing policies. . .
the red list means that GPs can't prescribe, even under instruction from a specialist,
however, I believe that the specialist can prescribe directly to you, which is a pain . . .
