I use another forum that has a map app that you can add your location to by postcode (it puts a pin on the map). I think it would be handy on here to locate people local to you (if they volunteer their location). Do we have the technology?

It only uses the first three characters of your postcode so it gives your general location - so effectively you could be anywhere in a three mile radius.
I'm happy with that level of security.

First stab here www2.black1.org.uk/~andrew/map/aadd/aadd.htmlClick on a marker and you get a link to the members profile page. At the moment I you cant enter yourself in the map. Send me a PM with the first part of your postcode and I will add you (I have guessed where planetdave lives - please send me you postcode) Any suggestions will be welcome

I am happy to discuss how it might be hosted on aadd.org.uk if that is felt appropriate.

Wow that's clever random! How did you do that and can it be hosted on aadd.org.uk? Would it be on the forum or the website?
Feel free to send me a pm about this, I'm definitely interested ;D

This would be great for setting up new local support groups. It would be so easy to see where there were enough people to make it likely that one would work.

I have updated the map with addresses I have been given (if you have forgotten you remind me). Please keep them coming.
I was wondering if anyone might prefer to be on it but not have there use name give. We could play this (at least) 2 ways. If you want to be anonymous - the map simply shows there are people in a particular area (no way of contacting them except by say posting to meetup). - there is a link to send a PM or email to me (or an Admin) who can forward this on to the person concerned
Also, I propose to change it so if you click on a name it zooms in a bit. Any other thoughts.
PS - the idea of getting you to type in postcode and add automatically is proving harder than I thought. At present I am happy to have the human contact of doing it via PM. If I get overwhelmed I will look further. Please overwhelm me :-)

Hi random,
Would you like me to turn this thread into an announcement so that more people can see it?
|
|
|
Post by random on Jul 21, 2009 19:37:19 GMT
Making an announcement would be a good idea. I suggest we also ask people to describe the town/city/area (eg London SE, York) they want to be described as.
For now, if people don't want to be named I could put them as "Anon SE22" or whatever. Presumably any comments could be referred back to this thread.
Boo - what browser are you using. it is meant to put up a bubble with the name. I might also put up the persons avatar from the forum if i can bothered.

Boo - can you try again now. I had left out a character so it was producing invalid HTML

Postcodes in cities can really be fairly small areas so the doing it by town is a good idea. Also, if someone lives outside a town, for the purposes of starting up new real world groups, it would be more useful for them to pick a nearby conurbation that they could get to easily.
Allowing anonymous ones is a good idea too, although someone (Random?) would have to know their membership name to stop abuse.

If you're fussed about security/privacy you can always give a neighbouring postcode. My abbreviated postcode has me living under the M67 (in an 'ole inth' road! ) a good distance from where I actually am. If you would like to know where you would appear then go to google maps and see where they think your postcode is. Even using my full postcode google has me living a couple of minutes walk from where I am.

It doesn't have to be the first part of your postcode. Either a Lat/Lng or a postcode of somewhere you regard as giving the general area.

Hi random, I've had a brilliant idea (uh oh run for cover ) we could also have a map for specialists. Sorry random I know that's easy for me to say when I'm not the one making the map

Seeing as i work for the R*yal M*il, i'm pretty familiar with how postcodes work, if you want to maintain a level of anonymity simply put your postcode as the primary postcode for your area, such as Bristol as BS1,it is pretty much the same as just saying which town or city you live in, not specific. If you want to know anything about post codes I'm definitely the person to ask!!
