I have recently been considering establishing an ADHD support group in the North Wales area. I am based in Capel Curig.
I have some experience of working with young adults with ADHD and other neurodevelopmental disorders, have read a great deal on these subjects, with a particular focus on the nutritional therapy for those with ADHD/Asperger's syndrome, and have ADHD myself.
I am particularly interested in people who would themselves be willing and able to offer help as I am hugely oversubscribed at the moment and will have precious little time to give to the running of the group, and do not consider myself in any case remotely administratively inclined.
I have made contact with somebody else in the area who is self diagnosed (inattentive) ADD. He says he may have more time to commit to looking into such a group.
I would welcome any advice as to go about setting up such a group.
Thanks,
Rob

Maybe we could make the support group come to you!
I reckon I could recruit a car full to come down your way once in a while for a day out.

Do you live in a picturesque area of north Wales?
If you drive Bristol is probably the easiest for you.

Unfortunately not... I'm in Herefordshire, and Bristol's a bit of a drive just for a few hours...

I'd go if I had the petrol money.
I used to go to Tranmere and my support group has people travelling from Cumbria so I feel a bit humble laying on a room for them.
We all think it's worth the bother.

I'll bear it in mind. Right now I don't have a lot of time, energy or money to spare, but I would like to meet up with others. Don't suppose there are any meet-ups in Gloucester or Monmouth, they're a little easier to reach for me?

Hi all,
thanks for the pointers and offers. Cheers Dave. I'll see what I can do. Swapping ideas with you and others who run groups would definitely be productive for me.
Sorry I've been absent from the very thread I set up myself! I've been massively oversubscribed with training for a marathon (a good 20 mile run yesterday in Mid Wales), a creative writing course etc etc. I do tend to keep myself busy but what with injuries, my usual flitting from one project to another, and occasional hyper-focus on my writing course, and a real push to get back on track with the nutrition I find so useful for my condition, I've been pretty busy. I work pretty tiring hours in a busy kitchen too.
I will try and check this site when possible, though, and have just written to a local ADDer who is interested in helping set up the group, so it will be slow but, hopefully, steady(ish) progress from here in.
We'll see.
ANyway, thanks again.
Rob

Oh and yes, I'm right in the mountains. I look out at the Snowdon horseshoe from my work! So yes, it's picturesque, though inclement wouldn't be the word

I'm in Brigadoon-esque mid Ceredigion so a support group in NW Wales would be fairly do-able for me.

There is a support group in connah's Quay, Deeside, Flintshire, it's held once a month in St Marks Church, I have never been able to attend as I have no babysitter and they don't allow children.
We could do with having a group during the day. We also have an ADHD team, they assessed my son for 3 yrs and then at the end of it stated he didnt meet with the DSM, I wrote back and stated that I felt that my son met with everything that the DSM had. Second opinion, lovely psychchiatrist, after only 30mins he diagnosed my son as having combined ADHD and also ODD, since then they have refused to help my son.
I would love to attend a support group and I don't mind travelling either.

Gary Sendall is the person to speak to - he runs WAADDSUP on the Wirral.
Go through his Facebook profile or ring the WAADDSUP number 07854 325653 if you haven't already.

Hi,
I also live in North Wales and would be happy to help setup a Support group.
I have 20+ years experience with adhd in children and adults ( the Adhd Family ) as well as having 2x children and myself with Adhd ( my poor wife lol )
I have also worked alongside Dr Barkley and various other Adhd experts over the last 10 years which has enabled me to help others who like myself seem to go around in circles.
In addition how about a virtual online meeting room using webcams and conferencing to enable anyone to join in the group sessions as well as have 1 to 1 for people going through a rough patch. I own a web dev business and would be happy to donate my time to set it all up.
Drop me an email chris@ugoclick.co.uk or tel: 0759 0044631 anytime night or day.

hi, i am a third year mature student also with adhd. Emphasis on the mature here lol. I will be doing my dissertation on adhd and the medication that are available for adults to use. It does seem a lot harder the older you are as all individuals have differing symptoms which effect them more significantly than others. It would seem that the medications though from what i have read accentuate the problems that people already seem to have making them more anxious. I study complementary medicine and from my experience when i am treating a patient with massage i relax, stop any involuntary movements and focus. I would be interested to hear any ones points of view on medications and alternatives they have found for coping. Also if anyone is setting up a group whether they may like to learn any new techniques such as massage therapies to aid themselves and fellow sufferers : )

Ooh! ooh! *jumps up and down* I'm interested!
I sent a message to the guy who started this thread ages ago but he's moved. For some reason I didn't post here.
I live near Betws-y-Coed and I know of one other person in the Conwy valley who might be interested and one in Llanberis.
Having said all that, I've just looked at Bagillt on the map and, much as I would like to meet up, you would probably be better off going to the Ladders support group in Liverpool.
