Interesting thread & so many good points! This from Cleverliteral hits the nail on the head for me
"The unfortunate reality for many people is that their ADHD is a serious problem and no amount of BS will make them happy. My approach of helping people would be based on helping them to have a better and more fulfilling relationships, because I see this as the most important thing for people with ADHD. I think the biggest problem is not work or productivity (although it's very important) but relationships with people. At least for me that's the main source of the pain. I believe that having a good relationship with another ADDer could be more effective than coaching."
1000% agree. Coaching may well be great, but actually I dont need help with that sort of thing (or if I do its on my list to do AFTER Ive sorted out my relationships).
Interpersonal Therapy sounds interesting, Littleowl. Ive tried standard, psychodynamic therapy (both before & after being medicated) but have to say it wasnt as helpful as it could have been if the therapist knew about ADHD. Not being understood just doesnt work for me. So a therapist, in my experience MUST know about ADHD. Ive had my 6 sessions of NHS CBT (she actually was the one who said I might have it, wish I could remember who she was) but again, undiagnosed & unmedicated it went nowhere.
Rebecca Champ looks interesting, but Cambridge is too far.
Oooshiny you said this
"I was also interested by what you said about relationships being more important than productivity - I applied the same priority when choosing between mph and dex. I do hit bumps, though, where my 'productivity' deficit creates stresses that then have a knock-on for my relationships. Hey ho." Could you clarify? Are they different for relationships? Which is better?
