Although this 10 year old BBC series isn't about AD/HD per se, there is an interesting section in episode 1 that deals with executive functioning problems in a man who suffers from a degenerative brain disease, which is affecting frontal lobes. And as many may know AD/HD being a frontal lobe/executive function problem, and the frontal lobes playing a large part im our personality, it's remarkable though not surprising that he shares some of the behavioural traits of someone with AD/HD. Prof John Hodges from the Addenbrookes Hospital gives a bit of a rundown on the frontal lobes. Anybody any idea what the degenarative brain disease that man has got, actually is? This part of the program is at the 26:02 minute mark.
Also in episode 1 at the 41:12 minute mark, another interesting part is a controversial experiment that was performed in Canada, where a woman was subjected to visual sensory depravation placed in an acoustic chamber wearing a motorcycle helmet that had some magnets embeded in the sides. The electromagnets could be turned up and down to increase the magnetic field, which stimulated the temporal lobes of her brain. As well as being able to induce dreamlike states in the woman whereby she would "see" lights, colours and tunnels etc, they could also, in a certain sequence induce feelings of a sensed presence in the room, an entity standing beside the woman.
It was the bit were the experimenter said, imagine someone having an experince as rich and vivid as this at 3 in the morning. Having a sense of a presence in the room or of someone taking hold of your body, that made me think of the dream post that leo started, where roland and bex mention something about feeling a presence in the room and feeling a sensation of weight on their hips.
I think the experimenter was making some connection with temporal lobe stimulation and "felt" religious experience in people. I don't know about that, but I would be interested to know if human dreamstates, including nightmares etc have anything to do with or have a connection with our temporal lobes.
Anyway, totaly random association on my part ;D But the series is interesting nonetheless, and I was fascinated by a lot of it.
Only problem with these particular google vids is that the audio/video synch is out a fair bit which I find annoying. It's ok as long as you don't watch anyones mouth moving while they are speaking!
So in the interests of life long learning and all, here are the links to all 6 episodes:
Episode 1 All in your mind
Episode 2 The heat of a moment
Episode 3 The mind's eye
Episode 4 First among equals
Episode 5 Growing the mind
Epsiode 6 A final mystery
I should also give credit to the guy who's site I lifted the links from. You should check out some of the interesting video links he has put together!!
