Depending on the answer, the query may lead to an idea. Is there any area of this site that may cater specifically to adult conversations? I know it's an Adult ADHD site, but there may still be younger members. Or even members who don't want to come across topics of a perhaps darker nature. If I were to give some kind of example, I'm thinking topics like; - Addictive tenancies with ADHD
- Substance Abuse
If these kind of topics are appropriate for these boards.

My opinion is that this is an adult forum and most of us talk about things of a 'darker nature' at some point, I think it's part and parcel of having ADHD and co morbid conditions. But perhaps start them in the lounge area or one of the other areas only visible to members?

Is a thread being set up for this yet In the lounge then. As I have some issues with the 'darker' issues surrounding adhd!
I'm surprised there's not already a thread about this as I read add/adhd ers. Are considerably more likely to have some sort addiction issues or substance abuse issues then regular people.
Well I've certainly had some darkness in my life and continue to do so. So would be good to discuss these issues with anyone else in the same boat.
So if this does get set up I'm in.

just start a thread. give it a clear title so that people know what they're going to be reading about - and no-one reads stuff they might not want to.
and a conversation is off... it's no biggie

Yeah I know that's how it works but was just being lazy and hoping someone else would start it!
Also, these elements of darkness which may be a part of some of our lives are illegal. So what are the rules about discussing illegal activities/substances?
For me if it wasn't for certain illegal substances I would never have found out that I had adhd!

mc1250, You make a good point actually.
I've checked the board rules, that I could find and there's no indication that it's against any of them. UK law is handy too as it's not an offence to admit having taken illicit substances.
Sounds like a plan. I'll try think of a suitable topic; and we'll take it from there.

Go for it mate. I'm behind you on this one. only thing I'm worried about is some people who can't or won't see the difference between recreational drug use and drug addicts! and may take a dim view on the subject.
But it's a surprise to me it's not been raised before(or maybe I've not noticed a previous thread about it) as from what I've read it can be quite a common issue in adhd ers.
I also remember reading an article about how many people that are in prison display adhd symptoms but obviously undiagnosed!
And thinking about my brush with the law many moons ago due to my lack of impulse control...I reckon There could be some truth to it.
anyway said to much now so let me know once you've started it.
Thanks

If you press search (top of screen, 3rd along), type "substance abuse" ..or whatever, leave rest of boxes blank and then press search at the bottom of the screen, you'll find loads of posts come up. All these things are really common in the lives of adhd'ers before diagnosis and therefore deserve to be frankly spoken about imo. I think as long as the conversations are either venting, processing, learning and supporting there should be no problem. I'm sure if there was a problem admin would responsibly and sensitively deal with it...so really, there's no need to worry.

Asking about drug use is part of the assessment - because ADHDers are so much more likely to use and abuse substances. I can't remember how many times more likely, but I've written a thread about it. We're more likely to be addicted to everything - Internet, drugs, alcohol, nicotine, binge eating etc. They're doing a study at the Maudsley ATM to see the effects of cannabis on ADHD - because so many ADHDers smoke it - more likely with the hyperactives. The inattentives are more likely to use cocaine out of choice. This is part of our symptoms and one of the reasons ADHD needs recognition and treatment. These are ok to discuss. The only thing that isn't entertained here are posts that would encourage someone to abuse or divert their prescribed medication. But, tbh, they don't come up anyway. And you're right about prison. Hang on a sec and I'll post the link to my thread with some stats on it. aadduk.proboards.com/thread/7731/mar14-adhd-stats-recognised-treated

Very interesting, I remember my Pysch asking me at some point if I had ever tried Speed (At a point where I'd only ever smoked Cannabis). I thought it was a weird question at the time until I started getting all internet Savvy and researched Methylphlenidate.
Did you know... My GP told me this the other week but I'm yet to verify.
Concerta XL (Methylphlenidate Hypochloride) was originally developed by the Nazi's during WWII in order to keep their troops Awake, Alert, needing less food and sleep in the trenches?
I didn't know that until he told me, but some of the affects I feel the most; Lack of Sleep, Loss of Appetited, etc.
Kind of makes sense.

Nazia speed! Is what's it's referred to. And I think the doc might got a little confused or heard slightly wrong info. Amphetamines have been around for a very long time. The nazis apparently just tweaked it to make it more potent somehow.
Anyway thanks for starting the thread. I'll be popping over there to have a look now.
