Howdy folks
Today I went to the dentist to have a tooth removed. I dont know about you guys but I have never had good teeth, in fact my new adult teeth were rotting as soon as they came up.
After many traumatic experiences at the dentist I have hardly any teeth left and use a denture.
Today I had another traumatic experience. AFter the dentist gave me approx 4 shots of local anesthetic I felt a sharp sudden pain and roared. She gave me another shot, still had pain and then she gave me 4-5 tiny shots around the tooth and I could still feel pain.
In the end she removed a root and decided not to remove the tooth. She seemed kinda baffled as to why I was still in pain.
I could also still feel some pain while getting the root removed and at one point I even grabbed the dentists hand in shock - embarrassed!
In the end they powered on while I cried and wailed in the chair.
I was so shook up after this.
While getting the injections my heart started racing like crazy and I thought it was because I was really nervous but I did some research and realised that this can happen as there is adrenaline in the anesthetic to make it work better and if the injection goes into one of your blood vessels it will make your heart beat really fast and then slow down again and in fact it is nothing to worry about.
BUT - I looked up methylphenidate and not being able to get numb enough and came across some medical notes aimed at dentists that the epheniphrine in the methylphenidate can cause the patient to need extra numbing.
Has anyone come across this before or had any experience of this?
Do you not take your meds when you go to the dentist?
Have you told your dentist that you take stimulant medication?
It is advised that dentists avoid or be careful with the anesthetic that contains adrenaline as this could have implications for a patient taking stimulant meds.
I just rang my dentists office to tell them I take ritalin and waiting to hear back from them - am guessing they will probably not know how to answer me.
I would like to be informed.
Cheers
