I have been given multiple possible diagnoses over the last 40 years ranging from bipolar to BPD to complex PTSD to emotional instability disorder and everything in between. I must have been on 30-40 different types of psychiatric medication and not one single pill made a jot of difference. I have had hundreds of psychotherapy hours and never moved forward. What this has cost the NHS is shameful.

Had so many issues in my life and they've all been put down to some other mental health issue, same as the ones you had thrown at you. Also been on loads of meds that haven't worked. However, when I started to be assessed for this and started looking in to it I've had soooooo many light bulb moments its redic. Learning so much from this forum and other peoples accounts. Thanks to all who have taken the time to post. You really are making a difference. xxx

Hi all, hope you all having a nice day. First post, looking forward to maybe talking to some of you and reading what is here. im 36, and someone close to me picked up on my behaviour about a year ago and suggested it could be ADHD, took it badly and then accepted they could be right. Recently got a referral from GP which explains a lot for how ive lived my life, and now just trying to get an assessment. Hoping to find the answers I need on here. again, lots to read on here so im sure ill find something

Hello. I'm another new person here. I'm 38 and my therapist suggested a couple of months ago that I might have ADHD. I did the NHS screening questionnaire and was fairly shocked to discover I fit the criteria. Now everything I have learned about it fits me and my struggles like a glove.
I've read a couple of books about ADHD, but am keen to read more if anybody has any good recommendations!
Feeling a bit at my wit's end really. Therapy over the last year has helped me do a lot of emotional work but I'm still embarrassingly helpless at managing my life. Not sure how to move forward and I don't seem to be making any progress.
I've secured a referral from my GP to the specialist in my area (Bristol) but not sure I can handle waiting the length of time it's going to take. My therapist mentioned something about private specialists who do take NHS referrals - does anybody know anything about that, or how you go about finding one?

Hi, another newbie, I'm 52 and got diagnosed last week. It's been a relief to find out what's been going on all my life. I had been diagnosed with dyspraxia last year, it answered a lot of questions but I felt there was more going on especially emotionally. My son who is 32 (also dyspraxic) got diagnosed recently with Inattentive ADHD which got me curious, as I found out it was genetic, it hadn't occurred to me before. Then I discovered it's different in women and the symptoms and issues were recognisable enough for me to seek an assessment. I went private as it had taken my son a year to get an NHS assessment, what with Covid and frankly not getting any younger I decided to pay for one. Outcome was I have Combined ADHD, it feels like it fits, it explains my anxiety, depression and social interaction issues in a context rather than just "I get anxious/depressed/socially anxious" ADHD explains my life so much better. Planning to try some meds to see if they help, waiting to hear back from the psychiatrist. Hi Lenore. It took me about the same amount of time to get my ADHD realisation. Maybe you could say a bit more about ADHD is different in women; I know autistic women 'mask' or 'camouflage' more than autistic men.
Hi Hannah. I still don't know why some posts get quarantined and not others. There may be some book recommendations elsewhere on the forum. I will check out Russell Barklay. I found Jess McCabe ('How to ADHD') videos good. I'm not surprised emotion-based therapy doesn't help with a predicament involving ADHD, but maybe problem solving or CBT would. I'm pretty keen to stick to NHS routes. For one thing I don't want treatment just for the sake of it (I've not trusted private therapists when they say I need more therapy), but also in trying to get the underfunded NHS to live up to the standards described in NICE etc, ADHD people are helping each other. I have searched the web for occupational therapists specialising in ADHD and there seem to be a few but not contacted them yet. The question I suppose is whether your GP or CCG would pay for the referral; I've found semi-private specialists for other things where it was difficult a) because the treatment wasn't deemed fully appropriate for the diagnosis; b) it was outside the CCG region.
Good luck both.

Hi Cassandro, I do think ADHD women mask, we feel under pressure to be competent and we cover up the ADHD to appear normal. I think if a woman is undiagnosed it's harder as she is often made to feel when she is struggling with life that it's her fault, or some personality or character flaw so what do we do, we cover up our 'flaws' as much as we can and get on with life, at least on the surface. I have ADHD-C with quite a lot of hyperactivity, I was constantly told off as a girl for not 'behaving myself', girls and women are supposed to be quiet, passive and composed (no meltdowns please!) so I suppressed a lot leaving me feeling depressed, anxious and self loathing, which led to meltdowns, self harm and suicidal thoughts though I never acted on them, I wanted to live, but living with myself was at times unbearable. In many ways I have been comfortable with being a bit different as an adult, my struggle was with not feeling accepted as I am, I didn't feel wrong but the world was telling me otherwise.

Hello I was diagnosed with ADHD(inattentive)this year. I'm in my mid-30s and am medicated. I'm now trying to understand what resources/support is available support myself as this was not discussed at diagnosis,I was just given a prescription. I'd love to have a support group or even task buddies. Body doubling/accountability partners are fine but I'm rather hoping to find a group that shares the things they are putting off and support eachother occaisionally in breaking things down/ gaining perspective of tasks etc. I hope I can find that somewhere here.

Hello everyone. My name is Chris. I live in a little town in the midlands. I have suspected I've had ADHD for most of my life, and it has ruined most of the things I've wanted to do. My business is falling to bits because I can't stay on top of the workload anymore. I have gone to the GP and have a referral. I called to chase up about it and I have been told the waiting list for the clinic in Sheffield is three years. I told the woman on the phone that I couldn't work and I was likely to be homeless by then and started sobbing. I spoke to the GP again and explained about the waiting list. They found me psychiatry-uk.com/ but the waiting list for that is over a year. I am here to find out about other avenues to get help. I am really desperate.
I can go private if I have to. But the website linked above points out in the small print that they don't offer any preference to private patients. I am properly lost.

If you are unable to work have you tried claiming Universal Credit and PIP? That would at least stop you becoming homeless.

I can recommend Reddit's ADHD group, you will find lots of active, likeminded people there (link below). Take care. www.reddit.com/r/ADHD/

Hi, I have a 20 yr old son who I strongly believe has ADD (though yet to have a formal assessment), he struggles socially causing him to become very depressed. I'm on here hoping to find information that can help him with his social issues and/or form friendships with similar people. Thanks in advance.

Hello, I wondered if you could advise me if you are still holding the support groups for ADHD in Bristol. The website states that due to Covid the meetings aren't going ahead, but this was back in July 2021.

Hello everybody! This is the first message on this board ever. If we need more boards we can set them up but for now we'll just have the one. Please remember that this board can come up on search engines, so we strongly suggest you register with a nickname and keep your e-mail address private. There are very few rules, but please try to respect others and hold back the urge to go on the attack (perhaps leave it 24 hours before replying to something annoying?). Please feel free to start conversations...

Hi all! Just signed up so wanted to say "hello!". Waiting for an adult ADHD assessment, after going through the journey with my now 14 y/o son. Going through all his symptoms, etc... made me realise that ADHD explains a lot of what I go through every day and have done all my life, which has been previously put down to symptoms of Anxiety and Depression. Having tried several treatments for A&D over the last 15 yrs, nothing has helped. So I am exploring the possibility that I have ADHD and maybe that is a cause of my A&D symptoms.
