Sheena, how utterly bizarre. I am a Dunfermline girl, born and bred lol. I still have the "pleasure" of living here ;D This forum has been such a great find. It's such a relief to know that there are people who actually feel, act and live like I do lol. I'll have a look to see if I can find the thread with info on the the Edinburgh Centre. Still finding it a bit difficult to navigate this site, but I'll get there. Again, thank you for your kind and supportive words

Hi, I'm new to the forum. I've been leading a double life most of my adulthood, struggling, but some how getting through education after years of failing exams and then starting work at the age 26. I did a search on google about 3 months back for "unable to focus and concentrate" ---- It came back with ADHD. I did some further research. If recollect back through my child hood right up to now Im sure I have ADHD. I spoke to my GP a few months back after sitting at home for the last 6 months going nuts. caught up in a silly cycle. doing all the wrong things. He asked me a few questions and was unsure how and where to refer me. and he started me on some anti depressents First, merton sutton Psychiatric care. After a few weeks i got a phone assessment and the chap agreed that I could have ADHD. He said i would need to be referred me to another clinic in sutton. Which I attended early this week, which was a total waste of time. As the guy had no clue about ADHD he was more interested in getting me on more anti depressents...which I had stopped taking a few weeks back. and trying to learn how to over come my problems with CBT. Anyway rather then boring you all further more. Can any recommended any Dr's in the South West London area who specialise in this area. I want to research the cost for going private. Thanks

If that were me I would ring Merton PCT and find out who is responsible for ensuring that the New Nice Guidelines re ADHD are adhered to then regale your story to him/her ! They have the power to kick ass and make sure you are referred to an expert in ADHD assessment preferably at the Maudsley ! Good Luck and don't let them fob you off !

Hello there. I'm new: pleased to meet you. I'm a twenty-seven-year-old postgraduate student and strongly suspect I have a bit of ADHD. I seem to be towards the inattentive end of the bubble, with a bit of hyperactivity in there for good measure. It's taken me a while to get here - I found this site a year or two ago, but have only just managed to talk myself into joining. Reading through some of the threads, I think I've found some people whose brains work the same way as mine. Hopefully we can help each other out.

Hi currantbunbury, Welcome to the forum, and I'm truly sorry I missed replying to your earlier introduction elsewhere It was an oversight on my part and not because there is a "done way" to do things on here Anyway, I hope you enjoy the forum, and please let us know if we can be of help, and again many apologies

Sorry, Roland. My post on Sp00ky's thread looked a bit crabby. I think I'm a bit wound up at the moment. Thanks for responding; nice to meet you.

Hello all,
I hope this is the right place to post as I'm totally new to this forum. My sister sent me an article on ADD this Saturday, asking me if I thought she might have it. Well, I couldn't believe what I was reading. It had never occurred to me that I might have ADD, as I had always associated this trait with hyperactive kids, and I've always been the daydreamy type with never enough energy. Then to find such an uncanny description of the struggles I have been facing throughout my life! I felt as if finally the answer I had been waiting for had dropped into my lap! Roughly ten years ago I found out that I am a 'highly sensitive person' combined with 'high sensation seeker', which was a great aha moment. But now I had a whole new piece of the puzzle. I immediately ordered four books on the topic, hoping I will be able to keep my hyperfocus up for long enough, lol! I've not yet managed to explore this site very much so far, but from what I've seen it seems a good place, so I thought I'd register and say hello.
Hope to speak soon!

Greetings to everyone and thanks for a graet site!!
This is my first step in attempting to deal with my AADD / ADHD.
I spoke to a couple of guys in my class at college earlier this year with ADHD, about ADHD ...Yes!! I'm back at college and I'm planning to go to Uni in Sept but need to do something abaout my AADD as it's been too much for too long. I cant even type this without it becoming too difficult.
One of my tutors suggested I check out an online questionnaire, so I did. After 3 attempts, I've actually finishing the 24 question test that I was advised to chech out... I scored 107 the first time ...out of a max 120. The second time I scored 102 with someone else present (probably because I played down a couple of answers in an attempt to appear more normal!)
I've always known I've had something 'not right' (...at the same time as having something 'not wrong'...!) Over the years I've tried to adapt to normal everyday life but can't and I don't think I can without proper help. I read a few postings when I found thios site (...gonna leave in my spelling mistakes - I've actually had a lot more than what's here but I've correcgted them ...aaaagh ...SEE WHAT I MEAN.
I've ticked all the boxes for far too long and it's time to get help.
...Where do I go from here?
Ian777
PS - I've wanted to post a reply on this site for some time now ...and I've done it ...and it makes me feel good !! :-)
I'm gonna try read thru some other stuff now, if I don't get too distracted. lol
It's good to know I'm not alone with this and at 44 it's time to do something about it...
...plus it's taken me 44 mins to write this.

Hi creamtea and Mac777
Always pleased to have new members - welcome to the forum.
creamtea - lots of people don't associate their difficulties with Adhd. For many the only knowledge they have about the condition is hyperactivity and that is just not the case!! There's also a very strong genetic link to Adhd so it's not surprising it can run in families.
Mac 777 - glad you feel the time's right to deal with the need to have your difficulties explained and congratulations for still forging ahead with your education! People with Adhd can be very determined.
It sounds as though your tutor has got some insight into how Adhd can present itself, so good for him pointing you in the right direction.
Services for adults with Adhd are still not very well developed but in some parts of the country things are moving, so let's hope you're in one of those area's - do you mind saying which part of the country you live?
The first step is to make an appointment with your Gp. Let him know about your difficulties and say you suspect this may relate to undiagnosed Adhd. Some Gp's are more enlightened than others but don't be put off. Your Gp can't diagnose you - he doesn't have the expertise to do that. He needs to find out which psychiatrist in your area has the experience and expertise to assess, dx and treat the condition and refer you on to this person.
Some Gp's deny the existence of Adhd in adults so take along the shortened version of the Nice guidance (National Institute of Clinical Excellence) and give it to your Gp. You can print a copy off by going to the FAQ's and it's there in the 1st section.
BTW it's taken me a similar amount of time to type this as I've been..... making the breakfast, reading the paper, feeding the dog and watching the TV!!!
Lots of helpful people on here who will be more than willing to give you support along the way.
annie

Hi Annie,
Thank you so much for your warm welcome, and for your great advice on how to go about finding help. I'll print out that document.
I'm not speeding to a GP just yet though. Have yet to register with a new one since moving house about six years ago (typical or what, lol!), but also I want to educate myself a bit more first. There are so many different viewpoints on this trait, and I'm not yet sure whether I need serious 'fixing' (though the state of my flat is getting ridiculous now). I have bought some large tubs of Omega capsules to start with.
Also I have been doing some more tests in the meantime, some online ones and some from the books I got, and the outcome is unmistakable, pretty much as expected really! (Still have to figure out the implications of Dr Amen's subtypes.)
One funny thing I noticed about the four books I've received so far: they're going on about how ADD/ADHD people have a short attention span and best take in information when it is presented visually; and yet, most of these books (apart from Dr Amen's brain scan pictures) are all text, text, text and no pictures or diagrams. They probably expect our Hyperfocus to switch on? ;D
Anyway, lovely to have found this place. Will explore properly soon!

Hey welcome lady39, Had to check your name twice.....nearly called you 'lady29'... check my poor attention span !! Welcome to the forum....feeling overwhelmed is normal...tearful is too, so don't worry. I felt relieved at first then had a bit of a downer. All normal reactions. Some good advice available on here if you need help with any problems/decisions or issues. We look forward to your next post.

Hello. Would you mind if a yank joins up? I've read the postings on your boards and already feel attached to all of you! Anyway, in the US, we don't have very good online support groups for adults w/ADHD and their families.
