I'm still giggling over No.2 son being an oppressed minority.

Hello,
I'm new & I have been searching for help on Adult ADHD/ADD. Myself & my partner think he has ADHD/ADD but we are in need of finding someone to assess him?
Does anyone know where we can get help? He has been to his doctor who has dismissed him & its has knocked his confidence back a lot.
We live in the Ayrshire Area but can travel to Glasgow,
Thank you in advance for your help.

Hello Loopylou GPs can be complete arses about ADHD - getting a knockback like that is distressingly common. I'm afraid Scotland is pretty patchy with it's ADHD provision so unless you're very lucky you'll be in for a bit of a runaround. Are you considering private? Whichever way you go your partner will need to go armed with something to make a GP take notice. Click on the red 'aadd.org.uk' button (above right) and dig around - it's got links to most of the stuff that's worth having. There's also an ADHD helpgroup that has regular meetings in central Glasgow - it's well worth going since it will pretty much confirm whether he has ADHD or not just by how he reacts to mixing with confirmed ADHDers (finding people that understand you is almost shocking) - and they also have local knowledge. Click on the link under this post and there's a link to the helpgroup in there. And keep your chin up - this site is very informative and we'll go out of our way to help as much as possible.

Is it me ? Am I the first one? ..... doubt it lol I am married to an ADHD sufferer, I know first hand what its like, also I am studying to be a dietitian (3rd year) and have a special interest in ADHD and Omega 3 fatty acids. I came across this website while doing my research, I managed to get my husband a referral to one of the specialists that you have listed on this site.... Very helpful. The referral has been accepted although the GP surgery have to get funding before he can go and see the specialist. Has anyone else come across this ... if so how long does it take to get funding. The GP practice is in West Cheshire and the specialist is in Birkenhead My husband was unofficially diagnosed after 5 years of self medicating, through a specialist in the drug service (with the help of his dad, who is a pharmacist). He was sent to the Maudesley in London for tests and has been receiving medication through the drug service ever since (Dexedrine as Ritalin was ineffective). He has not been receiving the treatment as outlined in the NICE guidelines .... no monitoring, counselling, CBT or occupational support etc. He goes to see a support worker every 6 months for a review, who doesn't know anything about ADHD, and as he usually sees a different one each time, he has to tell his story all again and again .... very frustrating! I have been with him to a few of these appointments and all they want to do is reduce his medication! and make sure he isn't taking any other drugs etc. Anyhow this is why I raised the issue with his GP to see if I could get a referral and the rest is history. He is now 38 and has had a very hard time upto now, abusive father (hyperactive child and high pressure jobs don't mix), near fatal accident on a motorcycle, his best friend died at the age of 21 (drug related), 10 years with an emotional blackmailer (and psychotic if you ask me), from which he has 2 beautiful boys, several brushes with the law etc etc. He has suffered from anxiety, which isn't too bad now ...... and has a fear of dying. Right think thats it

Hello Nichola Who's the specialist? The NHS ones tend to have a full book so it might stretch out a bit. A small criticism - I'd call your experience second party, it's a different story when you have ADHD yourself. Anywho - the Wirral has some good support going on and there's a helpgroup in the Wirral run by a guy called Gary Sendall (top man) called WAADDSUP. There isn't a website (Gary broke it, ADHDers eh? ) so you'll need to dig a bit (find Gary on Facebook for eg) but it's really worth doing and is at least as good as CBT.

Hi Dave Its Dr Mason in St Catherines. I hope its sooner rather than later, he has agreed to see him, but the surgery need to apply for funding first. I agree, I meant I know empathetically, I understand what he's going through and what other partners and family members experience. I have read the Adult ADHD pilot study that was carried out on the Wirral, very interesting. info.wirral.nhs.uk/document_uploads/evaluation/AppixN-WirralAdultADHDservRep.pdf

Thanks Dave, I have looked him up, I think it may take some convincing to get him to go as he does suffer from anxiety when it comes to new social activities. I will certainly keep it in mind.
thanks again!

Welcome Nighteyes - there's a section on here about the different medications. I started Concerta XL a few weeks ago (after a short spell on equasym) and have found that the mood swings/eruptive temper has lessened but then so has my get up and go... Early days yet - it seems to take a while to work out what suits you and in what dose.

This is probably the only ADD forum on the entire web that doesn't appear to be full of entitled wankers bitching about how "special" they are, or how they don't like to think of their ADD as a disability, etc. Sign me up.
In all likelihood I'll completely forget this board exists in, like, a day, but otherwise... hi, shiny peoples!

Hello Hotcherry I've not heard of prolactin before - is it bringing his mood down significantly?

Hi, I'm Ninea and new to ADD. At the same time I have had undiagnosed ADD from childhood. I have recently started medication (Concerta) and I'm amazed by the difference. I can see that medication alone is not the whole answer. I'm looking for a way to get support and hopefully give support with others who have these issues. For instance, I woke up this morning feeling unsure of what are my priorities and how to organize my day. It seems like it would be good to talk with someone about this and get immediate feedback. I could then reciprocate and see if this would be a support to both of us. Maybe this isn't a good idea and there is something better to do instead. All I know is that I have to find ways to keep myself from dithering my time away in unproductive circles. Any direction you could offer would be helpful! Everything feels equally important & I know that can't be true.
