Hey, Ninea. You didn't say how long you've been on the Concerta - have you settled at the right dose? How has it helped? Some NHS areas offer Cognitive Behavioural Therapy to support you in learning new ways of thinking and behaving. You should ask your psychiatric service what's available. You may need to get used to having a brain and thought processes that you can actually have some confidence in - you probably do know what the right priorities are, but may just not be used to trusting your own judgment on such things. As planetdave says, there are a fair number of local support groups around (he leads one in Manchester, and there's a Central London one happening on Tuesday), so there may be one near you. And if you hang around, you may find that you connect particularly well with a few of us - I know I've made some excellent friendships here from which I get the sort of support you might be describing. Or, if you've got the cash, you can employ an ADHD coach who will help you learn good habits and behaviours. Lots of options. Take some time to read up and get to know what's on the site - and welcome

Hi! I'm so glad I found your response! I'm taking concerta 27mg and it seems to be a good dosage for me. I described it helping as being able to follow thought though to conclusions while being able to hold on to the original thought that started the process. I also just feel more relaxed and less jumpy. It's only been about 1.5 months so I'm not sure what to expect. I think that my difficulty in prioritizing is part add and part fear from past bad experiences since I've a long history of starting things I don't seem to be able to finish. Now that I have the support I'm hoping that I'll be building good experiences and that I will build more self confidence. I'm an architect, working on my own also I have all the family, daily life struggles that everyone has to move through so it's complicated as normal. I think I'm also suffering from the "why did it take so long for me to get help" blues.... I've read already that those blues are not uncommon and to stick with the here and now and eventually enough will change. I do love that I found understanding here! I do think it would be wonderful to have a coach but money is an issue. I'm hoping to coach myself enough to put my work life in a more successful trend & then get addition help. The one good thing I keep hearing throughout my life so far is that I am very creative!

Hi goosey, Thanks for the generous offer! I'm just starting my own practice after working for other for years. I've got a couple of small projects that are challenging me enough. I feel like this ADD stuff is in a way, the most important thing for me to address since it is the thing that impacts the rest of my life so much. My 18 year old son was just diagnosed after barely making it through school and he's a bit adrift so at home all the time. I see that you are a senior member so I will be grateful for your feedback as I learn to participate in this community. Being somewhat new to this for of communication is challenging. For instance, what do you mean...pm me? Thanks again, ninea

Hi ninea, My hubby worked for a building company for a few years before embarking on his own. Best thing he ever did He does lots of extensions etc but the pinnacle is designing our new house, which is almost ready to move in to ;D Anyway, sounds like you've been having a hectic time. At least you and your son now know why things have been so difficult. The links Ravendarque have posted look like a good start for you. You just need to gradually work out strategies that help you best. Sorry, pm = personal messageIf you click on to my name you will see ' send personal message' at the top, if you click on that, you can send me a private message. I only joined this forum a year ago and my experience is limited in comparison to the 'gods' on here. But am very happy to help where ever possible.....as are lots of others ;D

'pm' is 'personal message' - like an email, but to your forum persona. If you look at the top right corner when you're logged in, you'll see 'Hi Ninea, you have [##] messages'. If you click on the red text, or on the red 'inbox' button, you'll go to your personal inbox. It lets you have a private conversation with another member.

Hi everyone I'm another 'newbie' on Concerta 36mg from private diagnosis but GP today told me she cannot prescribe as off-licence so now being referred to Maudsley. Went to Central London group last night with my ADHD partner and found it really good though. Oli.

Went to Central London group last night with my ADHD partner and found it really good though. Oli. This is an interesting problem. If the private psychiatrist (as long as they are UK based) is being refused a shared care agreement to prescribe it will make no difference if you go NHS - otherwise it's libelling private doctors as being inferior. Best check what your GP says about this. Off licence is off licence and a specialist psychiatrist is a specialist psychiatrist whoever they work for. It really is professional libel otherwise. Unless you are feeling properly pragmatic and willing to bend over. It might be easier to change GP to one that is cooperative rather than getting rediagnosed.

It's particularly heinous given that (without naming names) the psych in question is also currently an ADHD specialist for the NHS. Go figure.

Thanks for the replies. I don't get the impression anyone is being particularly unhelpful but then I don't have a great deal of experience in this area. GP didn't mention shared care agreement. Little bit confused.
Congrats on the dx shiny.

Don't ask, def don't get. Ask why, given your doc's status, they wouldn't accept shared care!

Hmm I get the impression the psych might not have been too hot on the idea for some reason. Like I say, I'm a bit naive to the process so I shall make further enquiries. Meantime I have tomorrow's revision lecture to dream about!

Well, psych in question does it for others here, so....worth asking questions outright until you understand exactly where everyone stands. It may just be that shared care wouldn't be an option until your dose is titrated and steady. Bit of a pain, tho, if you're simply talking at cross-purposes.
Hey, am I imagining things, or did you just turn into a big red pussy? Lovin' the new username!!! ;D

Heeeeeeeeeeeeeelllllllllllooooooooooooooooo Woooooooooorld,
Wow got dx recently and just had my dx letter through from the doc at the hospital......now I can finally see my GP about getting meds. The clinic at the hospital have recommended treatment using Concerta. I was relieved but now after reading a few posts from some people talking about how their doc wont give them meds I am getting a little worried that I haven't quite reached the peak of my uphill struggle!
Anywho just thought I'd say hi and introduce myself!

Hi planetdave, Thanks for the welcome. I don't have any specific questions at the moment. I listened to the Radio 4 programme about ADHD (presented by Rory Bremner) and started wondering about myself. I don't currently feel like going to the doctors and pushing for an assessment. I doubt that would help, even if "successful". At the moment I'm just interested to know that other people seem to have similar traits to me. I usually have this gut feeling that everyone thinks in the same way as I do. More recently I've started to think that this feeling isn't right.

Hi all, I am 30 yr old student from Nottingham. I am currently studying for a PhD at Trent. I am having a nightmare trying to get diagnosed through my GP. My Psychiatrist is prejudiced and wrote a nasty letter to my GP saying I was just trying to get a letter from him to give to my uni so that I could get an extension on my PhD (like I need HIS help for that - I went to him for a diagnosis of ADHD!!). I am now thinking of going private - I can't take the way the NHS make you feel when trying to get a diagnosis for this - I just dont have the emotional willpower. I am thinking Dr Sally Cubbin sounds like a good bet. So, erm, yeah, 'Hi' *waves*

Hi, been 'lurking' here a little while now, figured it might be a good idea just to join. I am a university student (mature ) in Swansea, Wales, but came here via Canada. I received Dx of ADHD more then a couple years ago by a psychiatrist and a couple years later I had a educational assessment done by a psychologist, both in Canada. The EdPsych results were ADHD-I (inattentive type), dyslexia, dyscalculia and dysnomia. The last couple months I have come to realise that the 'I' part of the ADHD-I Dx may be a lot more important for me, then I once realised. I had not paid any attention really to the 'I' part and wish I had found out more about it before focusing on the other Dx's, as it seems to hold some keys to unanswered questions about 'myself'. Anyway, thank you for the site, and sorry for rambling.
