Do you just see black? (Or red if it's light?)
Do you see after-images of what you were just looking at?
Is there a faint green tinge? (Or maybe another colour, but I suspect that it would always be green, as it's the opposite of red.)
Is that tinge even all over or does it make shapes or patterns?
If it makes shapes or patterns, do they move?
From the first time I noticed as a child?/young teenager, I have usually had like red and green clouds, always moving gently towards the centre, until they're gone. Sometimes (possibly related to blood pressure or stress levels) they are quite misty, sometimes vividly red/green.
Ignoring the patterns that come with migraines, I have very rarely had anything different from the inwards moving clouds.
About 20 years ago I had a bit of a religious epiphany/psychotic break, and the clouds were gone. There was just flat black (or red).
At the time I figured that the clouds had been from background anxiety, and had disappeared because I was so happy, and that may be true in a way.
They gradually came back, and I stopped noticing them again.
Recently, since starting on Ritalin, I've noticed some changes, a couple of days ago there were loads of tiny green dots very close together. Last night there were 'v' shapes all over, but this morning there is nothing at all, just flat black/red like when I was schizo. I think I mentioned elsewhere on here that Ritalin makes me happy. That can't be coincidence. The patterns or lack of them must be related to mental state/brain chemicals.

What an interesting question marionkJust now I see black in the shade and red in the light. Tried again. This time I see the after colour of what I have been looking at, What I see when I close my eyes depends on what state my brain waves are in. So just before falling asleep I see pictures. I use this as an aid to go to sleep when my brain is hyper. I hunt for the pictures.

I'm like you marionk - if I close my eyes I see swirling clouds or... like oil a puddle? Made up of every colour, but dominantly reddish--orangy-pink or green. Vividness varies with how I'm feeling, but mostly it stays the same. I also get 'visual snow', which I've had for as long as I remember. So even when my eyes are open, I'm usually seeing very fine 'pixels' of colour and light, that don't exactly impede my vision, but I'm always aware of. Makes it difficult for me to focus on far away things or details sometimes, and the ADD doesn't exactly help lol

I get afterimages, then the black/red depending on lighting, but usually a sense of movement. At the moment I can see horizontal bars of light too – maybe that's from being at the computer.
