Hi everyone, My name is Natalie (Nat) and I’m a postgraduate student in my final year of an MSc Psychology with University of Derby. I have just been given ethical clearance to recruit participants for my final project and have added some info below in case anyone one on here would be willing to take part. Project title: ADHD in adulthood: A qualitative study of lived experiences, self-image, diagnosis and service provision in the UK
Aims and objectives: The aim of the study is to investigate the lived experience of people who are diagnosed with ADHD in adulthood. • What is the lived experience of adulthood ADHD including the diagnostic process. • Experiences of service provision and treatment after diagnosis. • What works in service provision and how can this be improved? • The role of ADHD online support groups and communities. • How adulthood ADHD impacts self-image and if self-image changes as a result of diagnosis. This is a qualitative study which requires 6-8 participants to take part in an interview which will last between 45-60 minutes. Once participants agree to take part and complete the consent form, they will be interviewed via Skype or phone and voice recorded for transcription purposes. Participants will not be pressurised into providing more information if they feel they have finished the interview before this time and have no further responses to provide. The recordings will be transcribed and analysed with the aid of NVivo software. This study will use a thematic analysis approach to interpreting qualitative data and look for themes, commonalities in ideas and also differences in attitudes towards lived experience of ADHD. The rationale behind choosing this form of analysis is that it is able to offer an inductive approach where the researcher does not take a preconceived stance on what the data will provide nor on a participant’s lived experiences. Coding and theme development will be directed by the contents of the data. This is in fitting with the context of the study which seeks to listen to participants in order to make recommendations to improve service provision and provide a deeper understanding of what it is like to live with adult ADHD. ADHD must be the participant’s primary diagnosis. Co-morbid conditions such as depression and anxiety frequently occur alongside ADHD but these should not be a primary diagnosis. Participants should be over the age of 21. Exclusion criteria include having a comorbid psychiatric condition which has been given as a primary diagnosis, people under the age of 21 and those who live outside of the UK. There is no external funding attached or additional organisational involvement. This is a student led project. I am currently employed in the NHS as a Band 5 Research Assistant and have full DBS clearance. Ethical clearance for the study was granted on 9th February 2018 by University of Derby by two separate academic staff. Completion (submission) date is 8th August 2018. It is hoped that the findings from this study may be published in a peer reviewed journal. The idea for the project has come about as two of my friends were diagnosed in adulthood with ADHD and have experienced some challenges but also positive aspects to diagnosis and treatment. I would be very interested in particular in hearing about how online communities such as this can have an affect on self-image and esteem and may act as a form of self-sought support. An in-depth participant information sheet and consent form can be found at this link: derby.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_0Ife96BTVKFlarbThere is also a pre-written interview schedule which you are more than welcome to read through and make suggestions if you can think of any important topics to consider. I have put it up via Qualtrics (securely and anonymously provided by University of Derby) at this link: derby.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_ekP9raVT3LNTvedPlease get in touch either on here or via email if you would like to participate or contribute ideas to the research in terms of important considerations. My email is N.Webster4@unimail.derby.ac.uk. All communications and data are held with the GDPR data protection regulations and University of Derby ethical code. No personally identifiable information will be shared with any third party at any point. All the best, Nat

Hi!
Are you aware that a lot of people with ADHD have great difficulty using the phone or Skype?
It's a recurring topic on these boards.
For this reason I'll not be in contact.

Sorry Nat good luck with your study but am afraid I can't concentrate for
5min on the phone never mind 60!!! I don't possess Skype (I hate the phone & hate my photo taken)
I didn't last through my own adhd assessment had 2 rely on friends,
my boss & family members 2 fill in the blanks. So prob not going to manage
An hour interview. Couldn't u just post questions on here? But don't make
The questions 2 long I struggle to read blocks of text.

Hi both,
Firstly, thanks so much for replying. I did have concerns about the phone or Skype usage and mentioned this to my supervisor. Your posts both confirm my worries that this is going to be very difficult to carry out! Thank you for this feedback. I find Skype to be annoying at the best of times but unfortunately the ethics board would not allow me to meet people in person.
I also agree 60 minutes is very long. It is the usual time given for a qualitative interview but I do mention that people are free to end the interview before then.
Your feedback is very helpful and is even something I can feedback into the limitations of the study. I think I am definitely going to encounter problems here! I will have a think about ways around this.
Many thanks for your time, Nat

You're very welcome glad 2 be some help. My sister's just done a PhD &
Moans at me all the time about recruiting participants for her studies.
Think she'd moan a lot more if she had 2 get lots of adhders 2 fill out forms!! Good luck with that!!!

Hahaha! Yes, it is difficult to get people involved in research. I completely understand why to be honest. People are busy and may have many worries about being treated like "guinea pigs" and just numbers. I appreciate I am an outsider to the ADHD community and am grateful to even just have constructive feedback on the study design. It's extremely helpful.
I'm actually mentioning both the points you have made to people who are getting in touch; about potential phone/Skype issues and maybe having a much shorter interview. I hate Skype too, think I best turn off the video for everyone's sakes!
All the best, Nat

*** UPDATE *** Based on the valuable feedback from people, I am in the process of designing a written interview which can be completed online and in your own time over the course of a week. I am hoping this will make the study more accessible and inclusive to people who struggle with phone communication. Many thanks for helping ensure that more people are able to take part if they want to. I will ensure it is mentioned in the write up that your comments were used to help improve the project design. This will be a general (anonymised) comment as several other people have emailed me with the same constructive feedback. All the best from Nat

Hi Nat,
I was just looking into a research proposal myself (Finalist M.A. Psychotherapy at Minster Centre, London) when I stumbled across yours.
I've got ADHD. I am 55 and was diagnosed last year.
I think I may need to rethink how I do my research as I may run into difficulties finding participants too. I'm happy to help with yours. A fellow psychotherapist had suggested I ask similar questions to the ones you are asking. If there are 5% of us with ADHD then practitioners need to know this stuff.
I just tried to email you but when I cut and pasted your email addy it wouldn't send. I am happy to help. I'm not sure how to contact you. Here is my email: jones.sorcha@gmail.com
Warmest,
Sorcha

Hi Sorcha!
Great to hear from you. I actually began to think about the project a few years ago when a friend on the psychotherapy training I was doing was diagnosed. Then a fellow parent at my daughter's school was recently diagnosed in adulthood. There seemed to be great similarities and also real struggles with services and diagnosis.
There is not much in the literature around the phone usage difficulties - I actually discovered that from this forum and another closed group on Facebook. Quite a few potential participants have told me it is just not going to be possible to use the phone. That is completely understandable.
To make the study more inclusive, I have just been given ethical clearance to use a written interview which is great for me as it saves on transcription too! You could try a similar approach? There is up to a month to complete it and it will automatically save as it goes along.
I will send you an email - it would be great to chat further about the study if you would consider taking part - thanks so much for your time.
All the best from Nat

Hi there,
I'd be happy to take part. A phone or skype conversation would be fine, but I'd be able to give more considered answers from a written questionnaire... however a written one you might never get back because I'd forget hee hee!
pm me if you still need someone.

Trying to find articles on late diagnosis and/or ADHD in middle-age and later life almost non-existent. I'm sure this an area ripe for research!

Hi Natalie
I would be happy to participate in this if you still need volunteers. I was diagnosed at 53. I'm OK on the phone, except that I digress a bit when my attention goes elsewhere!
I'm really glad that you're doing this research. Communicating awareness within the medical community and to the public in general is vitally important.

Hi everyone, I'm sorry I have not been keeping you up to date with the progress on my MSc project on ADHD in adulthood. A lot of people have got in touch with me and I became a bit inundated with managing all these responses. I'm now ploughing through over 20 hours of interviews and hoping I can give a fitting platform for the experiences that people have so generously shared. I am hoping to get the results published and if this is successful, I will be sure to post the link to the paper on this board. I'm really very sorry if you posted on here and I missed your message. I am hoping to continue research in supporting adults with ADHD as I feel it is really very important. There is still time to complete a written interview if you are interested, but the transcription aspect for the phone interviews means these have now concluded. My email is N.Webster4@unimail.derby.ac.uk if anyone would like to get in touch. Thank you for letting me post within your community, it is very much appreciated. With best wishes, Nat

Hi everyone, Just a quick message to confirm that I have now finished the recruitment phase of the study - thanks so much to everybody who took part or expressed an interest. It has been an absolute privilege to hear people's life stories and at times, unbelievably difficult experiences with services. Some people have had excellent services, but the provision across the UK is very inconsistent. I will be making the findings available via ResearchGate in the first instance and am hoping to publish the final paper in a peer reviewed journal. If anybody is interested in reading the final paper, please get in touch. With very best wishes and thanks again, Nat
