Hi all, as the subject says, I am really keen to get my official diagnosis ( it is absolutely clear to me now hat I have ADHD) but the wait time to even be assessed within the nhs is 6 months. I don’t have money to go private and am honestly in a panic. I have such big responsibilities at my work right now that help needs to come sooner rather than later and I just want to start on meds yesterday. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Well that was random!! Thx Tom Jones 4 most random but entertaining post of the week!
Piazzo I went through the same thing! Couldn't wait got in a blind panic
I ended up ringing 111 or 101 which ever the NHS no. is because my gp didn't no adults cud have ADHD
DON'T do that it wasn't helpful & I'm a bit embarrassed bout it now!
Ur in that panic stage so probably won't be able to listen but I'll give u some advice anyway
Read up on ADHD just understanding it helps massively
Ask loads of questions on this site u'll find people with ADHD have better tips 4 everyday life than someone that's read a text book about it!
Don't think that getting a diagnosis is going 2 improve your life
Don't feel pressured 2 take meds just 2 prove 2 others that u have ADHD
Talk 2 ure closest friends & family about it & then ignore their advice anyway
Sorry I went private I couldn't wait plus there's no ADHD service where I live
Sorry I might try do a better answer another time I'm not at my best at the mo sorry

You’re lucky your area has an adult ADHD diagnostic service in your area and 6 months is a pretty short waiting time, most lists are longer. Get yourself on the list! As speedy1 says, educate yourself, presume you have ADHD and put some coping strategies in place. Be kinder to yourself. Exercise. Getting an official diagnosis can help in itself. Meds can help some people, but not all and they’re not a cure. Some ADHD services only offer meds, some only offer diagnostic assessment and nothing else, some services are excellent and offer post-diagnosis courses and adapted therapy, but these are rare. It’s a postcode lottery. I find support groups really helpful and I set one up in my area. Most groups welcome people who are undiagnosed and can give excellent advice.

Just out of interest vagueandrandom what happens at a support group? Is it a sit down thing coz I can make even the comfiest chairs look like their made from hedgehogs I imagine it's like an aa meeting not that I've ever been 2 1 of them Not that it matters much coz there's no need 4 ADHD support grps in Bfd coz no 1 can get diagnosed here anyway

speedy1 the group I run is in an upstairs room of a cafe bar and we get the sofa and rocking chair and it’s really casual. We just chat about all things ADHD. It’s almost impossible to get diagnosed or get appropriate support here (Hull) so we talk/rant about the psychiatrist and share tips and experiences. We also get a few people trying to get a diagnosis. The first one I went to (Wakefield) was chairs around a table in a meeting room, Sheffield is the same, but it usually ends up in the pub next door. Leeds is in a community centre private room with hard chairs, so there’s frequent breaks and it’s ok to wander in and out. They usually start of subdued and end up with people in smaller groups talking loudly over each other, which is ok, but it can get very loud! Leeds has a really good ADHD service and people are told about the group by the clinic when when they get diagnosed, so it’s usually well attended.

Support groups are awesome. You know how some people harp on about meditation or healthy eating or whatever? It's a bit like that for me. There is probably no other time you can walk into a room full of strangers and feel like you just sat down in your Gran's house or something. Whether you have a diagnosis or not, whether you intend to get one or not, if you know in your heart you have ADHD, find a group and turn up once a month. You don't even have to say anything. Just make yourself a cuppa, sit down and listen to the banter. THIS IS BELONGING

speedy1 The Leeds group only started having meetings a year or so ago, encouraged by Dr B (Tower and NHS) who also encouraged me to set up a group in Hull (he sees a lot of Private patients from Hull as there was no service and now there’s supposed to be one, but GPs don’t know about it) There’s a few members from Bradford and there’s talk about getting a group going there.

Thanks vagueandrandom 4 all the meeting info I've been seriously considering attending 1 But.... My subconscious generally makes me avoid meetings Most meetings I've attended the organisers have usually asked me if there's somewhere more important I'd rather be & I generally come across as disinterested & disrespectful which I don't mean 2 be Also I think I might feel like I've gotta prove myself & probably exaggerate my symptoms & I'll probably come across as a complete prick! Or I'll turn it into a competition that I'm more adhd than u type thing & again look a total arse hole! But I'm curious I'd kinda like 2 meet people like me find my tribe & have that sense of belonging like @boost described So if u no when & where the nxt Leeds meeting is I'd be interested 2 no?
