Hi all,
So I've started driving lessons in my late 20s (ok, in my 30s); I am finding it hard to focus and I've failed my driving test a couple of times for stupid mistakes.
I've always been really easily distracted but I have managed to live it with it so far, with lots of procrastination at uni and then at work. The thing I struggle the most with is that I find it really hard to follow a conversation and zone out all the time (I even zone out during sex).
I was wondering what your experience with driving has been? I am hoping to maybe hear something similar so I don't feel crazy. I am still wondering if it's worth trying to get an assessment for ADHD. Just thinking about talking to my GP about it makes me really anxious.
Anyway, thanks for reading.

Sorry dude had no problems passing my driving test infact I passed it first time twice!
Got licence revoked for speeding when I was 17 so had 2 retake tests
Don't think all Adhders r the same on this but it is common 4 us 2 get banned
I concentrate better when going faster it must be an adrenaline thing or something
Get a buzz from it think it's probably addictive
Something I'm trying 2 work on! Just done a speed awareness course this morning

I love cars and driving but it took me 3 attempts to pass.
I went through several instructors too.
I still find it difficult to have a meaningful conversation whilst driving. One of them suffers!
Speedy, I can relate unfortunately. Been on the speed awareness course a few times. It's a miracle I've never been banned. I was even caught speeding on my way to an ADHD meeting once and when I arrived there was hardly anyone there. I was so annoyed.
I think I'm on 11 points atm by the mercy of the courts.

I hope this doesn't sound harsh but if you are struggling to concentrate when driving maybe it isn't safe to do so? Have your instructors ever mentioned your concentration? I have issues concentrating but luckily this hasn't affected my driving.

duckster a fellow biker chick (sorry I saw u had 2 stars & read 1 of ure posts outta curiosity) I get ure point but don't think orbit had a prob with concentration driving but more following instructions whilst driving I have trouble following instructions full stop weather driving or not! After re-reading my reply 2 the original post I don't think I was particularly helpful I prob wasn't feeling sympathetic that day Maybe it'd of been more useful if I had given some tips on how 2 get through a test and how 2 minimise distractions when driving I like 2 blast my music it makes me look like a complete nob head but 4 some reason it puts me in the zone Maybe it drowns out the other distracting noises around or maybe it's something 2 do with rhythm With the motorbike I think adrenaline prob plays a key role! & maybe the race can I got fitted it sounds mint but that's all I hear!

Passed second time, never had a speed awareness court - straight to court jobbie for me as I was doing over 100 but got 5 points and a <£200 fine so not that bad. Managed to close the M6 once as I went into the back of someone - driver in front was driving an automatic car that seemingly got banged into neutral so no brake lights to warn me, she even claimed responsibility but always the fault of the driver if you go up another car's arse! Bizarrely she was a stunt woman who was driving up to Liverpool to fall down a flight of stairs for a TV show. She'd also been a stunt woman in a very well known HBO fantasy series. But couldn't drive an autobox! I used to love driving but bad anxiety and depression over the last 2 years has killed it off. But one of my big goals for the year is to get my beloved little Nissan back on the road and back in love with a previous passion BOF PS - remember kids; Mirror, signal, manoeuvre!

I think practice may help. And ask the physician whether you can drive a car. It depends on the severeness of your state

Hi,
I passed my test last year after failing twice before. I took driving lessons on and off for about 20 years because I couldn’t follow the instructors instructions which made me very anxious. The part I found the most difficult was the independent driving part where you are given directions to follow. I just could never remember them, kept having to ask instructor to repeat them and I would still get lost. Even got lost in the test but still passed. I was shocked! I took the test in a quiet area though so that’s probably why I passed. Maybe it would have been different if I had taken it in a busy town!
I really enjoy driving and think that helps me concentrate.

My driving is ok. I drive too fast, miss red lights, get tickets... But no accidents in thirty-odd years. Loads and loads of bumps and scrapes whilst parking and reversing at low speed though! The adrenaline theory might explain...
However I get lost all the frickin’ time. Maybe because I’ve given all my focus to the actual driving. Even with sat-nav. I am perfectly capable of misunderstanding the instructions and or road signs then impulsively taking- or missing a turn because I’m questioning myself and the satnav, and any decision is better than dithering at a junction, right?
I’ve been back and forth getting the same junction wrong several times in a row. Because of this I often drive around the whole roundabout just to double check.
I once missed the m40 junction on the m25 but didn’t realise until I hit the m23. Very late for work that day...
I still barely know my way around the local roads after two years. When my partner is with me I’ll ask directions and she can hardly believe I don’t know where I am.
Running out of fuel? Grrrr...
Leaving the lights on a coming back to a drained battery! Grrrr...
Is it just me? I expect not ! 😂
