My local board doesn't have an adult ADHD assessment service. I've tried ringing other boards but they apparently don't accept out of area referrals. I can't go privately, I don't have the money for that at all. I'm not in education so I can't go down that route. What do I do? I'm out of options. I've tried everything I can think of. My doctor tried referring me to our board, and another local board, through a psych referral. I've spoken to two different CMHTs. I've spoken to private clinics. Everywhere I've basically been told "yeah we can't do that", and not given any other option. Could do with some advice I'm under NHS Wales if that helps (certainly doesn't help me).

Wales is tricky . . . I know of some people who have been diagnosed by general psychiatrists in secondary MH services, but it depends where you are and who you see. There’s a charity called Cardiff ADHD which is mainly for children and parents, which I believe is run by someone diagnosed with ADHD themselves. They may be able to help you as Wales has a different type of NHS

I've also contacted the aneurin bevan health board themselves, and I'm getting a phone call off of a mental health nurse at some point. Not sure what they can do though, if they don't offer the service and everyone around us doesn't allow out of area referrals :/

Source: www.wales.nhs.uk/sitesplus/866/opendoc/333576That sounds all doom and gloom but do you see what they did there? They have not denied the complete absence of a service with the inclusion of the word 'dedicated' When my script was transferred from Bristol to Caerphilly, I had to traipse up to Ystrad Fawr Hospital to get the 'OK' from someone there. I considered it a huge inconvenience at the time but now I think about it, I'm sure the guy was a consultant psychiatrist so this was effectively a diagnosis/confirmation of diagnosis. This may be a precedent of sorts you can use to your advantage? I've tried looking for names, dates, etc but have come up empty handed, sorry. What's the background to this anyway? I'm sure someone else will be more familiar with NHS constitution type stuff but my simple advice to anyone with ADHD in Wales is quite simply to consider whether Wales deserves the benefits we can bring when it appears to ignore us in our time of need. There are people quite literally losing their jobs from the poorly considered decisions by some NHSWALES outfits. We don't appear to be thinking about the big picture. We're not helping ourselves. Fortunately, Bristol (and others, probably) understands neurodiversity. I consider myself very fortunate to have been helped there. If you value your family/career prospects, you may be forced to look beyond the Welsh border. Best of luck.

Your Board has a legal obligation to have someone trained in your area, I couldn't be bothered with all that, in fact I was misdiagnosed with Bi-Polar disorder and have been medicated on every anti- Psychotic and mood stabiliser on the market and the whole time I was pretty sure the primary illness was ADD, I thought it was the inattentive sub-type, but of course you can have co-morbidity and have depression or anxiety too relating to the ADD, so watch they don't just slap some label on you because they are not qualified to diagnose you, In the end personally I did just book an hour with a private Psychiatrist who gave me the diagnosis of ADD- Combined Presentation , It cost £275 for that initial diagnosis and had I got prescriptions through the private clinic, the medication would be costing approx £150 per month, but the private Psychiatrist can write to your GP, asking them to do you a repeat prescription, we don't pay prescriptions in Scotland but if you have a prescription charge in England and Wales that will be all you need to pay, you may have to go back for a half hour appointment with the Private Psychiatrist about a month later in case the prescribe something that does not suit you initially but to get the ADD diagnosis will change your life, (some people would pay that for a tattoo!) and there is a good chance that after you have paid it, If you keep the receipt, you may be able to claim it back off your Health Board because they are obliged to provide that service in your area, it is the Board's responsibility but they probably find it cheaper just reimburse the odd person who has paid out for it themselves compared to paying for whatever training cert that it is that they need to diagnose it in adults. I have been prescribed Atomoxetine in the first instance and if it somehow does not agree with me, they are going to change it to Concerta (basically a stimulant based one, ie often known as Ritalin)., It used to only be available to adults who had been diagnosed as children but that is no longer the case, There are a few they can try but go and get diagnosed privately, It is too important, you waste years of your life otherwise and are risking developing a secondary Mental Illness by not having it treated. I went to the ROC Clinic and I know they have one in London but make sure about Wales, and also if you do go to a private Psychiatrist that firstly they do have the ability to diagnose in adults and then try to get your expenses reimbursed by the board and if they say no, get your Local MP to write to them and I am sure you will get your money back, because they have failed in their Duty of Care to train at least 1 staff member from their NHS staff in a whole hospital, that is just ridiculous and against the Government Guidelines, Try the ADHD help group websites and organisations because regulations are changing all the time and they keep up with all that so you know your rights, I hope this helps, Good Luck xx

I just got confirmation that I'm on the waiting list for Carmarthen's 'new' Adult ADHD clinic. 6 year waiting list.
I think we in Wales need to get used to helping ourselves...
