Hi all,
I am embarking on postgraduate study come February 2020 and have only just been diagnosed with ADHD (combined type - severe).
I struggled though my education and particularly during my undergrad degree.
As I’m newly diagnosed I don’t know what sort of help to ask for or what is available for people with ADHD in education?
My course is distance learning so one is the first things is to have the materials printed as sustained reading at the computer is hard, but reading generally is hard.
Any advice welcome.

For me, the best help I could hope for is for someone to ring me twice a day to make sure I'm not just working but actually doing uni work A bollocking once a week can work wonders, too! In short, external accountability.

I utilised the weekly learning support appointments i was offered to hold me accountable. during this time i would get them to help me plan realistic goals for the week and with essay structuring. I also found the dragon speech - to - text program incredible useful. I used microsoft excel to plan my research-heavy essays towards the end of my second year and it helped so much. my grades improved so muh once i had my diagnosis because i was able to seek the exact help that i needed based on my personal limitations. studying in the library also helped as studying anywhere near a kettle seemed a bit too dangerous for progress!

It is ironic that depending on course level you cannot get Disability student Allowance (DSA) - it's like you cannot experience ADHD on a level 2 course. At University I did not have my diagnosis and struggled and dropped out with good grades. You can study a lot more easy with medication because you can sit down to begin so you can get absorbed and you discover tools to cope with learning. See if you can get DSA because they can help you with learning disabilities.
