I've just joined today. I have a daughter diagnosed with Adhd aged 15 and now I too am on the way to having a diagnosis. I went for an ASD assessment and it was suggested that I instead met the criteria of ADHD and have been put on a waiting list. So I'm looking for support here please.

I guess what I meant to ask is what do I do now? I'm feeling quite overwhelmed.

Hi, I'm in the same boat as you (with the diagnosis not having a daughter. I hope everything works out for her) Funnily enough i was too impatient to wait for the NHS so went private. just got my diagnosis an hour ago and am equal parts happy, relieved, stressed and despondent!

Hi. It is a very overwhelming situation to be in.
I am in a similar-ish situation.
I am 43, in the process of being diagnosed (been waiting on my next appointment for 3 months) and am now beginning to seriously suspect my 2 youngest also have it (15 & 18yo boys) so am just only just starting to get my youngest on the diagnosis route. I have not even approached my 18yo tell him my thoughts and concerns as I am not sure how to approach it without doing my usual of being blunt about and him feeling like it's a personal attack and going straight into the fight part of fight or flight.
There are some videos posted in here that help explain and provide a little more understanding & the people here seem to be friendly, helpful and full of good advice about coping strategies and the like. There are also some websites that have useful information.

This is something like how it goes @igetboredeasy
For me my mum had seen a documentry about ADHD and told me that the program had described me 2 a t
So looked it up did an online test went 2 the doctors
Told the Dr think I have ADHD
Dr told me that it's only a childhood condition
then Dr went away looked it up on Google then rang me 2 say there's no service in Bradford for adults with ADHD
Recommended I went private
I'm guessing u live in a better funded city with better paid doctors
Just think if u lived here u still wouldn't be diagnosed

Hi, If you are struggling to get an assessment locally, your options are to go private. Of course not everyone has the financial means but psychiatry-uk.com is a good place to start in my opinion. Fortunately my local NHS CCG fund assessments this way so I was lucky to get NHS funding but if you can afford it and receive a diagnosis it is invaluable. Also I find this site brilliant www.additudemag.com/Good luck!

ayshigal, I second slackdad 's recommendation of www.additudemag.com/category/manage-adhd-life/. It is a very affirming site and has a section on adult ADHD. They also have monthly webinars on a wide variety of topics. I suggest looking at resources specifically dealing with adult ADHD rather than general ADHD information, which typically tend to be about childhood ADHD. If specific questions come up along the way, please post them.

speedy1, I got diagnosed late in life and have been discriminated by NHS for being ADD, i haven't really had any luck with a postcode lottery for diagnosis. What I am saying is I had no discussion with the doctor that they suspected I had ADD. I got a referral and I had no idea what I was being looked at for. ADD seems to be mainly be by third parties suspecting the diagnosis ie teacher or other similar profession rather than than a doctor. For me my only hint towards my possible diagnosis was walking out of a test for dyslexia when the test was taking to long at University because i made stupid assignment mistakes but got mainly the highest assignment marks.
