Hi there,
This is my first post. I was diagnosed with ADHD about ten years ago and have gone through a number of different treatment providers, first private, now NHS-based. I am currently living in Edinburgh and have a been prescribed dexamfetamine (Amfexa), which has worked fairly well for me for the past ten years. I take the maximum dosage: 60mg a day.
My GP prescribes for me, though I also see a private consultant in Glasgow who communicates with him. I have recently been told that the prescription is no longer part of the NHS standard and that they would like to switch me to lisdexamfetamine (Elvanse). With this in mind they have set up a consultation with an NHS psychiatrist. However, I have just found out that, due to current conditions, I will only have a telephone consultation with a member of the psychiatrist’s team. I am very wary of this, as I already tried Elvanse years ago as part of a private evaluation and it really did not work for me.
I am afraid also that the equivalent dosage in Elvanse (taking into account my 60mg Amfexa) is far higher than the maximum permitted for that drug, which means that I will either be taking a much higher dose than recommended or far less than what I know will work for me.
I know that the alternative is to go private, as I have in the past (by adding about £300 to my credit card every month), but under the current circumstances I am no longer able to cover those costs, since I am self-employed and currently out of work.
Has anyone got any experience with this and any recommendations as to how I can keep them from forcing me on to a drug that I don’t want to take?
Best regards,
Carolina
Ps: I forgot to say hello! and to mention I'm a 43 years old woman.
