My son (17.5yrs) is seeing psychiatrist next week for ADHD assessment. I need to contact our insurance company (AXA PPP) this morning to approve the assessment. I’m not even sure if health insurance companies cover this and conveniently they no longer provide a brochure (I think so they can constantly change the cover!).
My neighbour said to refer him for generic mental health and not specify the suspected ADHD. Could anyone advise of their experiences?

I got my assessment through insurance just said it was for ADHD assessment
I'm with beneden it's just like a top up insurance so if the waiting list on the NHS is too long or u can't get that treatment on NHS they'll pay 4 it
They provided me with a list of preferred specialists and I picked 1 of them
They also payed 4 the follow up consultation and were willing 2 pay 4 my triation period if I had chosen 2 take meds
I would definitely just tell them it's 4 an ADHD assessment

I paid for a private assessment for my daughter (same age as your son) as it hasn't ever made financial sense to have them on my work insurance, but needed to get a GP referral first.
My daughter is simply brilliant! She self-diagnosed the condition, persuaded me that she knew what she was talking about, so I set up the GP appointment. The GP's initial reaction was that it didn't sound like ADHD as she was struggling to get out of bed and engage with her schoolwork, rather than bouncing off the walls. Cue my daughter educating her about the inattentiveness side of ADHD, a complete look of surprise from the GP (worrying for others who've not got the ability to do what my daughter did), and then a GP referral for a private psychiatric assessment.
After supporting her through the assessment, when the psychiatrist told her that she was absolutely correct in her assessment and definitely did have ADHD, I equally definitely knew that I did too! The following morning I got straight onto my work medical insurance (Cigna) and explained what had happened. It took a fairly drawn out conversation, but they did agree to the consultation. That happened exactly a week ago, and my diagnosis was also confirmed. Next steps towards treatment should start next week.

Hi Mumalaa, Did you get anywhere with Axa? I have Axa insurance via work, but diagnosis and treatment of adhd is specifically excluded in the handbook of what they will cover.
