Hi there everyone. I have not written in a forum before so please be gentle. Here goes...I have a son 17 who has not been diagnosed with ADHD but I am now beginning to believe he has it more so as he has grown older. Telltale signs on reflection were there perhaps - we had seen private councillors for various problems with his behaviour at the time but never diagnosed. It now affects his life more so now - he lies and steals at every opportunity, complete impulsiveness with every decision which affects us all as a family and him too - and not for the better. We can't trust what he says or does. We are definitely not living as a "normal" family - we all have to hide our possessions, money, keys and cannot leave him home alone and don't think we can live like this much longer. He use to be the most kindest child - lively, mischievous, cheeky boy to someone I do not recognise anymore and not like who he has become.
I guess at the least I am looking to find out:-
- how long does it take from a referral letter from the dr to get an assessment/diagnosis on the nhs?
- will therapy/medication stop this lying/stealing/impulsive behaviour?
- what would be the best way/tips to approach him (bearing in mind his age) to suggest that we get an assessment? Unsure what I can do if he does not agree - any ideas?
Any suggestions/comments will be much appreciated. I don't really have anyone else to speak to about this as I don't think anyone I know has personal experience of this.
Thank you for reading
