Growing up with ADHD: First person experiences of treatments
This study is about gaining an insight to individual experiences of growing up with ADHD, and the treatments/support they received.
You are invited to take part in this study if you have received a diagnosis of ADHD in childhood and have an interest in sharing some of your experiences of the disorder and the treatments you received. Additional criteria that should be met in order to participate in the study are that you are male, between ages 18-25 and (have) receive(d) multi-modal treatment at some point, which means medication combined with other interventions (e.g., getting information about ADHD, behavioural therapy, skills training, etc).
If you choose to participate in an interview, we will meet on the online platform zoom. During the interview we will ask questions and you will have the opportunity to share your experiences. The questions during the interview will be concerning areas such as the diagnosis and treatment you received and how you evaluate this. Other questions will concern aspects of your life such as school, relationships with friends and family and how you coped with your symptoms of ADHD through your childhood until now. This interview will take between 45 and 90 minutes. We will schedule the interview in consultation with you, somewhere in the period December 2021- March 2022.
By participating and sharing your personal experiences it may help the tailoring of future treatments of ADHD for individuals. ADHD is a heterogenous disorder, and not every individual will require the same treatment approach. There is a wide array of treatment options, however their effectivity are not always optimal and may not work for every patient. By sharing your evaluation of treatments offered to you and your experiences of ADHD, it may help the understanding of what treatments and support should be offered to others diagnosed with ADHD.
The research has been assessed and approved by the Ethical Assessment Committee of the Faculty of Psychology and Neurosciences, Maastricht University (reference: ERCPN 244_147_11_2021).
