Hi all, My other half and I recently realised that he is displaying many symptoms of ADHD and has been struggling professionally and with education too. What s the best way to get a diagnosis? NHS? or private consultant? Advice much appreciated. All best

Hi @justwondering85
The best way doesn't exist. In an ideal world, your GP would refer to an NHS specialist . . .
However NHS services don't exist in some areas and where I live, a lot of GPs don't know there is a service.
Demand for adult ADHD assessment has massively increased recently, so a lot of private services/psychiatrists
have long waiting times or have closed their lists to new patients. I run a support group and know of people
using diagnostic services provided by private psychiatrists who are not specialists and one run by a dietitian
who has specialist training to assess, but can't prescribe, so you need to do some research if you go private.
Another thing to consider if your husband wants to try medication is the cost of private prescriptions.
GPs can't take over prescribing (and are not obliged to) until a suitable medication and dose is settled upon.
If the first one works, great! but you may have to try a few. I'm currently paying over £100 per month on
private prescriptions as my local NHS service discharges you after 6 appointments and I couldn't wait 2 years.
The best thing to do is to do a lot of research and put in place coping strategies while waiting.
If your husband is still in education, he should be able to get an educational assessment through disability services
(again, no meds this way) and get extra support.
