I am asking yourselves in the hope you may be able to direct me to any evidence or professionals who may be able to support my case.
After having recently been evicted I am now dealing with my local (Edinburgh) council housing departments. After making, what I believe to be a vitally important request of the housing department, I have discovered their lack of adequate considerations for neurodivergent individuals, who may, or may not, have additional mental health needs.
For the record, I am an adult who has been diagnosed with autism, and am still awaiting an assessment for ADHD. Furthermore, and this relates specifically to my discussion with the council, I have been housebound for eight years with agoraphobia.
As I mentioned above, my search for support and/or evidence, concerns my initial interaction with the housing department. I asked for additional support acquiring a ground floor floor flat, making what I considered to be a reasonable argument that living on a lower floor (I currently live on the second floor), in an area where I am closer to friends, would be better suited for my condition and my progress overcoming agoraphobia. The department replied, stating...
“a move to a ground floor may be something that would impact positively on him psychologically, but this appears to be something he has self-identified as a requirement.”
Obviously, I have used only my own experience and logic when I suggested that living within a community where I could seek support, and on a floor that would remove obstacles and grant me easier access to outside, but I do believe this will help. However, I lack sufficient evidence to make a better case to support my argument. As I would like to return to the housing department and offer them evidence, do you know of any research, anecdotal evidence, associations or people that might be able to assist me in this? As I am on my own in this venture, I would appreciate any help that can be offered.
Many thanks
