I'm currently a Christmas temp in a toy shop and for the first time ever I revealed that I'm suspected of having adhd because the symptoms caused me problems in the job I was doing prior to that.
I worked in one retailer for three years and I wouldn't have left if they hadn't have gone bust. I didn't actually declare that I was suspected adhd but I think they guessed. One of the managers we had was really understanding and never yelled at me if I wandered off when I was supposed to be stocking shelves. He'd just gently remind me to go back to what I was doing.

id like to do that, i think ive been trying too hard to push self up career ladder with jobs im not really suited too as there is to much distraction. Plus only just being diagnosed with adhd and the struggle that brings to get medicated, so pehaps need to give self break cause hate all this at moment making me ill. I wake up in t6he morning panicking its horrible.

I reveal my ADHD to HR
It's a mixed blessing. In the job where it didn't make a jot of difference they completely over-reacted, management went into a siege mentality and my supervisor tried to shield me from them.
Which meant there was no written evidence of the incidents (by both sides) when things came to a head and I got fired.
I went from that to a tiny office (two of us) where we used to discuss my problems openly and how it could be worked around. That failed too, but it wasn't malicious so I have no hard feelings - some jobs just don't work out.

I used to get all sarcastic when HR sent those disability monitoring forms around. I used to tick every box and then sign it Spasticus Autisticus after the Ian Dury song

My line manager was great and terrible when it came to my problems. He did let me swear at him and answer back a lot more than might have been strictly acceptable to a lot of people, but then he tended to try and analyse me a little too much too. You can't get it absolutely perfect. Sometimes people screw it up by trying to make an effort. He was a clumsy old bugger but he did try, so full marks. Kind of.

I agree about the office jobs ! Nothing more boring ! YYAAAAWWWNNNN !!!!!!! So much so that I have carrier bags full of correspondence as I cannot deal with it ! The last time I sorted it out my friend came over as I couldn't decide what I needed to keep and what I didn't and that was in March 2008 !!I am a dispensing optician which is good because I like people and its not all sitting down as I need to walk about a lot when helping to choose frames which I love as its visual and I'm good at it ! I'm also good at adjusting specs which again is a visual gift ! Good at selling too !! Struggled with the maths at the beginning of my course as I did a correspondence course along with my 1st year ! I had a mental breakdown when I saw the course work as it was like a different language but I got a local teacher to help me once a week for an hour and WOW she really explained it but the next day it was gone because it didn't interest me ! I passed though so that was ok ! It was tough and needed to be disciplined with studying which I did in the early morning as I am a morning person ! Anyhow its not what I really want to do but I still enjoy it and the bills need to be paid !!

They have been better of late ! Its so much better since I have had my meds as I can cope with them stressing me out and I just give as good as I get ! ADHD RULES !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Damn, every time I read threads like this it just seems like >>>>>this way to the scraphead.
Its not just ADHD is it though? There any many mental illnesses that also have bad effects.
Then we have the credit crunch............arghhh.

Its good to read about work things, as that is where most of it comes to the surface for me. I'm realising that people cope in many different ways. Thanks for the info and ideas, everyone.
I have revealed my ADD to my employers and colleagues, mainly because it affects them very directly (in my case--will differ for other people) and they have a right to know what the hell is going on.
I didn't do it until I was certain that the diagnosis was right and I knew what I was going to do about it. I think it was about 6 months after dx that I told first the person who works most closely with me (and has suffered the most for it) and then the MD, then the rest of my colleagues bit by bit as the time seemed right.
It's a small firm (there's really only 8 of us in the office plus a couple of people who work at home) and if I'm screwing up on a deadline, losing stuff or acting impulsively they need to know what's going on so they can act appropriately.
No-one seems to have had any problems with it, and in some cases they make jokes about it, which is fine by me as long as they are funny.
However, we are not a typical firm. We all have areas of the business we are responsible for, and as long as I keep bringing in new projects and delivering them no-one is really going to mind if I have ADHD, OCD, ODD (which I do, a bit), or even full-blown Borderline Personality Disorder.
ADHD was the root cause of my absolutely total failure as a manager--heavily fired once, got out just before I was fired a couple of times. I think if I'd known what the problem was I would have managed it much better. I'm a consultant now (very limited management responsibility but lots of deadlines), and manage by working 16-hour days and most weekends. It gets the work done, often on time, but it's a bit of a strain sometimes.
Telling people is not always possible, but if it is, it's much less stressful than not, and many people are very supportive if they understand that you are trying to get a grip on it and doing your best to do the job. In the end, I couldn't not disclose it as I really felt I had an ethical obligation to at least tell my close colleagues as it does affect them. I also tell anyone I am going to be working closely with ahead of the project so they can tell me if they are getting concerned. I try to talk about it as if "it's just stuff, no big deal but it can be a headache in practical terms" and that seems to work quite well.
I have also had a lot of questions from people concerned about children and partners as well--they are relieved to talk to someone who has ADHD and is passably functional most of the time. I think I've also got a responsibility to talk intelligently about ADHD whenever it's appropriate so that everyone else is better informed about it. As we all know better than anyone else, a lot of myth-busting is still needed.
Being a bit ODD as well is a slight help here: it makes me bloody minded enough to take risks.
What I'd say now is try and find out as early on in your life what it is you can and want to do. I've done the wrong job for most of my 30-plus years of working life because I never understood what the problem was, and I'm locked in now as I've got to earn enough to look after someone who can't work. If I'd known about my ADD and how it would affect my working life I'd never have got into that position. The fewer people who have to go through doing the wrong job for years the better.
Hope that helps. Your servant aye.
Hugh
