Hi there,
New to the forum - and site - but will try to be brief. Have been convinced for a while now I have ADHD - inattentive type. Not much point getting diagnosed that I can see, as cannot take stimulant medication plus other medical stuff means have been preoccupied.
But my main concern is for my daughter - she seems to be displaying the same symptoms except = although not excessive hyperactivity - she is more hyperactive than I ever was, mostly just fidgeting and verbal diarrhoea. But like me she is easily distracted and whereas it didn't interfere with my education for a variety of reasons, she is getting a lot of negative comments and pressure from school about 'taking responsibility for her possessions' and taking a long time to complete tasks. At home her behaviour is often a nightmare too - she is very 'contrary', arguing with almost everything we say just for the fun of it. This hasn't really happened at school yet but I think at least one teacher has had a bit of a 'personality clash'.
I don't want her to be labelled. I have quite a good sense, I think, of what she needs and how we might achieve it, especially if I can get the school on-side and get them to be consistent with what we are doing at home. But I am wondering if I'll be able to get the school to help unless she gets an official diagnosis. At the moment, she's not a 'problem' for them, and she is meeting all the average targets, however it is clear to me she isn't meeting her potential and also I don't want them to keep giving her a hard time about being disorganised, but I do want them to work with us to teach her how to be a bit more organised.
So does anyone have experience of anything similar and would you say it's better to support her without getting a diagnosis or to get one? Because she may in future have the same medical issues as me I also don't want her on medication. Thanks!
