Hi, Basically I've had trouble with the NHS and want to see about getting a private diagnoses for ADHD somewhere in Scotland but I'm not really sure what to do next. Here's a bit of background: I've been diagnosed with Dyspraxia since highschool (I'm 24 now) and a year ago I was reading about ADHD and realized that I had a majority of the issues people associate with ADHD/ADD (Although a lot overlap with Dyspraxia) and thought the medication available would really help with my concentration issues especially. I saw my local Fife GP and asked if I could get tested to see if I have ADHD where they told me they really only deal with children with ADHD but after insisting they said while I couldn't see a specialist I could see a general psychiatrist from a local hospital. I saw her four times for 15 - 30 minutes where she asked me questions testing my problem solving skills/memory skills/stuff like that that) in the end I was told while I show a lot of the symptoms of ADHD it doesn't really exist in adults (which really annoyed me) and the NHS usually just deal with children with ADHD (Which I was told originally), maybe it could be something else. So what I am looking for is getting a second opinion privately, any advice would be very helpful, I read in the "Private Therapists for Adults with ADHD" thread they are a private therapist in Glasgow, a question I have is if I get diagnoses from her will it be accepted by the NHS? Thanks for reading. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

Hi Mark
Welcome to the forum
Yes things are more difficult in Scotland as the NICE guidance doesn't apply there. It's absolutely ludicrous they don't but there is an organisation called SIGN, in Scotland which I think has a similar role to NICE - so lets hope they catch up soon!!
When you saw your GP did you take any abstracts from NICE - if so what did he think of them?
The reason I ask is that if you go for a private dx it will be important to have your GP "on board" The GP will be the one who writes out the monthly prescriptions, under the guidance of the Consultant.
On another forum someone has posted who lives in Edinburgh and after a bit of a battle, he is being treated.
I've sent you a PM with a bit more info

I will have to look up about SIGN, the psychiatrist that I saw wasn't very helpful and kept saying things like the symptoms for ADHD were vague and generally didn't seem to know much about ADHD. Do you think it would be worth asking to see if I could get a second opinion and that I would be interesting in seeing a private consultant? (I know I am out of the Edinburgh catchment area which might be a problem, I was told that only children could see a specialist though through the NHS)

Hi Mark, Here is a link to a report (ADHD Services over Scotland) which was published by NHS Scotland in March 2007, and on page 36 in the section describing ADHD services in Fife, it says the following: At the time of the service profiling exercise, there was no dedicated specialist service for adults with ADHD, however, a consultant psychiatrist in Levenmouth with a special interest is planning to establish an adult ADHD assessment and treatment service which will be available to adults living within that locality.www.nhshealthquality.org/nhsqis/files/ADHD_ServicesOverScotland_MAR07.pdfAlso, Dr Chris Steer a paediatrician at Kirkcaldy's Victoria Hospital diagnoses and treats children with ADHD, and has commented in the press about the need for adult services so he may know of an NHS consultant with an interest in adult adhd. You could try contacting him and asking him if he knows anything about the consultant psychiatrist in Levenmouth. Here are some contact details for Dr Steer, unfortunately, I can't guarantee that they are up-to-date: Dr C R Steer, Paediatric Department, Victoria Hospital, Kirkcaldy. Tel: 01592 643355. Email: Chris.steer@faht.scot.nhs.uk

This guy is brilliant. He will test you quickly and privately. It will cost you £400 but your life will change because of it. He's in Glasgow: www.adhddirect.co.uk/index.html

Hi there life laundry.
Posts are normally "quarantined" until an Admin can "approve it. AADD-UK does not recommend specific services/individuals, however, I think it's helpful for adults in Scotland to be aware there is an organisation such as that run by Gordon Brown. Unfortunately the development of Adult ADHD services (NHS) is probably even slower than those in England - if others know differently, it would be helpful to know so the information can be shared with others.
Making no comment about adhddirect, it is important people are made aware of the fact that for treatment to continue (under the NHS) your Gp will have to be willing to refer you on to a Consultant Psych, at your local Mental Health Trust. If the Gp is not willing to do this you will have to pay private prescription costs.
I think you mentioned in a duplicate post life laundry that your Gp did refer you on to an NHS Consultant and the outcome was positive. Maybe you can come back and give us more details about which Trust you were referred to?
