I'm not gonna try and give any advice on how to deal with this, because I really don't have an answer. But I'll just give a quick insight to my use of smartphones/internet usage and how it goes hand in hand with ADHD.
I'm always on my iPhone or laptop it seems, it is kind of like an addiction and I'm not sure how I would react if someone took it away from me. Its the perfect excuse to procrastinate from something I should be doing at the time, and every time I do it I'm like, 'I'll just have a quick look at this' and I genuinely think to myself it will only be for a couple of minutes, but it nearly always turns into 15, 30, 45 minutes +.. Then I get frustrated at the amount of time I've wasted. You could say its a bit like an alcoholic saying he's just gonna have one drink, but ends up getting paralytic 3 hours later, that may seem a strong comparison but the principle is more or less the same.
For example: I got up early on Monday so I could go to the gym before work. Whilst making breakfast the radio was on and they were talking about Syria on LBC, I questioned something one of the callers had said about it and I ended up looking it up on my iPhone.. I then sit down to eat my breakfast still engrossed on reading about Syria, before I know it I'm looking it up on my laptop.. I finish reading about Syria, so I have a quick look on this forum, then a quick look on the UFC webpage and so it continues - before I know it 1 hour has passed, I don't have time to go to the gym, and I end up procrastinating more and running late for work!
The point is, I know its not doing me any good, I could have quite easily read up the facts I wanted to know on Syria later on that day, but I want to know NOW, I dont have the patience. I think its very difficult for non ADHD people to understand.. Its hard enough for me to understand. And yes it is a poor excuse to blame it on a disorder, but it really isn't as easy as just telling him 'don't do it'
If you do manage to sort it out somehow I'd be very interested to hear how you've cracked it, cus I could do with some tips! Well done for going a whole day without, and good luck with your GP/diagnosis : )
