Hello all,
I've had a really interesting evening reading a lot of these posts. Some very enlightening, thought provoking and humorous stuff here and it's great to know such a support forum exists. I'll probably share sometime when I'm struggling again :-) - for the moment and for the most part things are sweet.
I'm the partner of a great guy who may (very likely) have ADHD - he's now 41 and never knew much about ADHD until 6 months ago. Since the first step from everything we've read seems to be a full assessment and diagnosis from a specialist, we're trying hard to find this. My guy has spoken to the NHS ADHD department in Yorkshire (where we live) and the waiting time to see a specialist seems to be lengthy - even with a referral from the GP. GP's for the most part (and correct me if i'm wrong) don't seem to be clued up enough to diagnose adult ADHD let alone provide the necessary support.
Seems private docs are available but the one we've found in London who sounds legit will see patients without a referral on relatively short notice (within a week or two) but is very expensive - GBP750 for the assessment and diagnosis. If further referral, treatment, titration of meds is required, that all has additional costs associated. I'm wondering if this is the going rate or if it is ridiculously expensive?? I have read Ned Hallowell's books and recommendations on finding someone who understands and can properly diagnose ADHD and I'm sure this doctor covers the essentials based on his website www.ndslondon.com/doctors.php?d=7&c=8
(advice on this provider much appreciated)
My guy completed a load of pre-appointment questionnaires and myself and some of his other friends completed different questionnaires and he sent to this London doctor. While he is yet to go to the appointment, the doctor has said based on the questionnaires it seems ADHD is very likely. If it's that simple, why do the trip to london and pay the high price for assessment? Can anyone advise on good UK professionals to see for diagnosis / treatment / follow-up / support / prescriptions (if necessary) and counselling / coaching?? We are willing to travel and pay whatever - just as long as the care is quality.
Advice, contact details and referrals to reputable ADHD professionals in the UK much appreciated.
Many thanks,
Amy
