Hi my son is 9 and was diagnosed with add today. Doctor wants to put him on elvanse 30mg. I'm really worried about the loss of appetite is my son likely to lose lots of weight? Also will he experience a comedown? I'm worried he's going to be like a zombie while on the meds. Also doctor said he only needs to take it when at school but will stopping it at weekends mess his system up? Any advice would be greatly appreciated in so worried right now.

Hi roxy
Welcome to the forum.
Although this website is directed towards adults who want to learn/share information about ADHD in adulthood, we are always open to parents who may/have children with the condition. I'm assuming your son has been assessed via Camhs and that is where the dx has come from - have I got that right?
Presumably there was a reason for his referral which you might want to let us know a bit more about? Contrary to popular media (Daily Fail) ADHD is not over dx in the UK and many children/young people fail to have their condition recognised. Normally medication is begun at a small dose and then titrated up until the person reaches the optimum benefit. If medication is not properly titrated some people may appear to be "zombie" like which does indicate the medication is not at the correct level. Reduced appetite can be a feature of meds for some people but, this can be overcome by timing meals before taking meds and after the effect of the medication has worn off.
Lots of parents have concerns about giving ADHD medication to children particularly given the poorly presented information in the popular press. It's important to know that ADHD medication remains in the system for a short time and for that reason parents often feel encouraged to give them a trial. Depending on your son's level of difficulty, it is important to consider whether the benefits of medication outweigh the disadvantages of having untreated ADHD.
It's not an easy decision for you and only you can make the decision. Good luck

As far as I'm aware Adderal is not licensed for use within the NHS in the Uk.

I see a lot of people here paying the private prices on their meds which worries me a bit. I was given a private Concerta prescription but Boots quoted me £68 to get it filled - I was surprised by the high price, isn't it available as generic? I am still waiting for my GP appointment but I am hoping I can get the Concerta on the NHS so I don't have to pay a silly price every month for ADHD medication. My GP is nice and has known me since I was a kid, and I was first diagnosed with ADHD as a kid though I was never treated before and was only just re-assessed as an adult, so I'm just hoping I don't run into problems. From what I've read on this forum it's just down to luck. Hoping my GP comes through for me on this, I simply cannot afford the private cost every month.

I was origanally diagnosed with ADHD at aged 7. I had treatment back in 1980s called Immiprimine which helped back in the day. It has caused problems with occupational and employments. I have symptoms on all 3 cores of ADHD. Went to see my psychiatrist 3 weeks ago and done some tests as well as getting my old records from CAMHS ( child and adolescents mental health service) to confirm I was originally diagnosed with this. He has just prescribed me with Elvanse and I just taken my first 30mg capsule today. Keep me chilled most of the day but affects have worn off way before the 12 hrs it stated they would work for. I'm not the type to take an extra tablet just because it wore off too soon before the end of the day. Made me feel light headed about half hour after taking. And heart rate went a bit faster than normal but not concerned about this. Will post more comments once I have taken for a week to let people know how it affects me. To be honest it was quite easy to get these meds through my psychiatrist and got normal prescriptions from my docs. I need to have a review every 3 weeks to make sure I'm getting the right dose. As far as I'm aware the police have classed it as a controlled substance under a Class B drug of not prescribed.

That's right, GPs are not able to diagnose you or say that you don't have it - they have to send you on to a psychiatrist. My experience of Elvanse is similar to what others are saying - 6 hours and then an extended comedown. Your GP can write them if they "want" to after you're already established on them by a psychiatrist or at least that's is what my doc told me. Does anyone know where I can get them filled in or near Faversham?

Hi, some have mentioned being able to buy Elvanse from their local Sainsbury or Tesco's. Do you initially need a prescription for this or if you have had it in the past is it ok to buy it from the store ??

It's a controlled drug and you need to have a prescription

Hi there, Just wondered if anyone could confirm what the costs of Elvanse were in the UK op a private prescription? I have also read that it is currently classified as a POM so can be prescribed much more easily than controlled drugs, can anyone confirm this? Thanks Mark

Hi, I shopped around at different pharmacies and found it £10 cheaper so I paid £68. My doctor won’t help as I went private because I could not wait two years to be seen by the NHS having spent 50 years with ADHD. I pay this out of my PIP. Getting well is my priority.
