Hi. This is the first time I am using this board. I have managed well in my medications over the last year and a bit. Usual ups And downs with tweaking the dosage. Over Christmas and through the new year I had to reduce my dose due to my blood pressure, which was awful as I went back to my bored and tired old self.
My psychiatrist, who I see privately, prescribed me Concerta mad Medikinet (to help when the Concerta were off in the afternoon). The Medikinet is new. My prescription is private and now costs between £150-£200. I am now struggling to afford this and the private appointments.
I have asked my GP if he can prescribe my medications and work with my psychiatrist, but I am yet to hear back. I know they have resisted this in the past. I just feel stuck. I need the medications to work effectively and do things, but the costs is so high that it is straining me financially. I just comity ally feel that I am disadvantaged. I have never had the NHS for anything and when I need it most it feels as though it had failed me.
Does anyone have any advice at all. I did read the NICE guidelines and they actually recommend a 'shared care protocol' whereby a GP prescribes and monitors in liaison with the specialist. It states nothing about it having to be an NHS specialist.
You would think having ADHD was enough, but I'm not even getting the level of care you would expect. I am not good with my finances anyway as I always misjudge or middle it up, but with these costs there are adverse radek films on my life. Any help or advice would be really appreciated.

This is an unfortunately common problem. . Some people have no problem getting shared care agreements with their GP and a private specialist. . it's one of those things. . it's up to the GP . . Some GPs will insist on an NHS dx in order to prescribe NHS meds. . .there doesn't seem to be much sense in this, but there are a few people on here, who have had this experience. . Apart from getting boshie with your GP . . your options are: discuss with your GP WHY they are resisting shared care. . if it is purely that they won't work with a private provider ask to be referred for an NHS dx . . long wait. .may have to fund out of area if there's no ADHD service in your area. . the extra work on their part may make them see sense. . I'm sure you've already stressed to them how the meds are having a benefit and how you can't financially sustain your private treatment. . stress how your MH is being affected. . If all else fails. . change GP. I hope this is useful And welcome to the forum
