Hi
I'm a mother to a soon to be 4 year old boy. He has always had struggles with attention, defiance, staying still and at times he is ill then complete destruction. Initially we hoped he was 'spirited' but since he started nursery it has became apparent his behaviour is extreme and not age appropriate. After the initial 'do you discipline him at home' type chats the teacher referred him for input with ed psych and we were also referred to the local assessment centre as his behaviours were becoming more extreme.
Initially they mentioned high functioning autism but now, a year in ADHD is now being mentioned more. I'm ok with this, I see it as a word to describe behaviours so I'm not upset about this. Well not upset now, a year ago I felt sick to my stomach at the mere mention!
What I am struggling with most (along with his behaviours, he has been sick lately and very destructive) is I've just read in a recent report 'severe ADHD'. I know this might be relative to the age he has been exhibiting these behaviours but I have stupidly googled in and I am so intensely worried. Everything I have read has been so negative - lifelong troubles, exclusion from school, ASBO behaviours.
Surely some with severe ADHD go on to have positive behaviours and cope with life? I suppose I am looking for reassurance that my son isn't set to end up like that? That correct support will help him go to school and live a normal life? Its not a firm diagnosis so he may not even have it but it does seem to be the general feeling from both school ed psych and paediatrician.
I'm maybe looking for an answer that no one can give me. Thanks for reading if you got this far xx
