So I’m pretty sure I have ADD inattentive type. All the self tests I have done online suggest this and it would make so much sense of my life. Now I’ve realised this (at the age of 30!) I really want to get some support to improve my life. I’ve spoken to my GP who is happy to refer me to the Maudsley as this is my local hospital, however the waiting list is over a year at least.
So my question is, if I find a private clinic to do the diagnosis sooner, how does that then work? Will I still need to keep paying to see them for all my follow up and meds? Do I get the meds as an NHS prescription or will I have to pay full price? The clinics all suggest a diagnosis is affordable for me, but it’s what happens next I am worried about. I’ve read on here lots of people saying their GP refused to prescribe the meds they needed.
Does anyone have experience of this? Should I just wait the year to be seen on the NHS? The GP also suggested I see occupational health and self refer to IAPTS for support while I wait, but I am not sure how helpful they can be without a diagnosis?!

Hi hermione. The answer, as always, is it depends. . . Talk to your GP before you privately and find out if they would be willing to prescribe meds under shared care. Most GPs will only take over prescribing once you’re stabilised on meds and not during trials and titration. If you get on with the first medication you try, this could be relatively quick, but finding the right medication and dose can take time. You would usually have to pay every time you see them and private prescriptions for some meds are are really expensive. Some NHS areas also have a policy of refusing shared care with private Drs You can remain on the NHS waiting list while having private treatment. Occupational Health might be useful if you’re having difficulties at work
