Hi
I am from South Africa and will be starting a PhD programme at Edinburgh in April 2019. I was diagnosed with ADHD as a child and have been medicated since. I would like to continue treatment in the UK for the duration of my degree (3 years). I am a dual-national with a Brit passport, but I am relatively unfamiliar with the NHS and how ADHD medication is prescribed in the UK.
I have a few questions that I am having difficulty finding answers to:
- Can I use my childhood diagnosis in South Africa to continue treatment in the UK? - Will I need a new adult diagnosis to continue treatment?
- If so, could I get a new diagnosis in South Africa (since it appears waiting lists in the UK are very long) and use it to receive treatment in the UK?
i.e. are international diagnoses valid in the UK? - Does the NHS cover ADHD medication? (e.g. methylphenidate)
If anyone could assist me with this matter, I'd greatly appreciate it.
-James

No, you need a new diagnosis. Your old one will be helpful if you have evidence. You'll have to get a referral through the NHS (can take months to years) or privately (weeks).
