I am on a 1 year waiting list for an assessment. It's been 2 months so far and the thought of another 8 months wasting my life waiting around for answers is killing any motivation I have. Does anyone have any tips or advice on how to cope with life between now and then. I am 29 and I have struggled with every day since I can remember. Mainly organisation, forgetfulness and getting distracted to the point my brain just shuts down in the middle of the day because I have started so many things that I can't finish. There is no one to ask for help as everyone just thinks I'm lazy, clumsy, ditsy or "going about things the wrong way" I've lost count of how many times I've tried to explain myself but no one understands what I'm trying to say and it never comes out what I want to say. So basically all I'm looking for is some little tips to help me get by for the next 8 months or so.

Is going private an option for you?

Is going private an option for you? Is there still a waiting list if you go private?

No wait if you go private. I had an appointment 2 days after my doctor sent my referral.

Yup - no wait for private.
I couldn’t wait either - it was driving me (more) nuts 😂
There are some downsides IMO
I frequently doubt my diagnosis and because I went private I can justify my doubts because I sometimes wonder if the psych would’ve given me whatever diagnosis I wanted. After all I was paying for it. Of course I did tick all the boxes too but I was already convinced I was ADHD and had ‘revised’ for the assessment. Mostly I don’t doubt it as I’m 110% typical adhd, but I’d still like a more general and lengthy assessment one day as I’m not sure I have the whole picture and it niggles.
The cost of the assessment is only part of what you’ll need to pay. Titration and prescription costs, which can mount up if you can’t quickly find the right meds and the right dose.
The meds themselves are pricey if private.
It can be hard to find a GP willing to prescribe on the NHS. Might be worth checking with your GP first.
If you need or want to change meds in the future you’ll have to go private again. Or try to get an NHS assessment in order to access an NHS psychiatrist (hard to very very hard depending on postcode) who in any case might not agree with the private assessment.
There are things you can do while waiting... Reading up on ADHD for a start. There’s loads out there - and not all dry and depressing. I like the American online ‘additude mag’ and totallyadd on YouTube. Some good Ted talks...
Can also access NHS mental health services for various kinds (and qualities!) of therapy with or without diagnosis .
There may be a local adhd support group.
And there’s this place 😁 Or India 🙏
